Can you stop gossip on the web? BBC wants to know

"A court injunction may have prevented sections of the British media from revealing details of a compromising allegation concerning Prince Charles, but that has not stopped rumours abounding on the internet. Currently there is far more freedom to libel an individual on the internet than in the print or broadcast media. Of course, it is not just members of the Royal Family who are the subject of website gossip - television presenters and famous footballers have also felt the heat. Should there be tighter controls of what can be said on the web? Are celebrities and Royals unfairly targeted? Send us your views."

Your comments:

All this "freedom of speech" and "let us decide" stuff in this context is ultimately damaging to society - we no longer have statesmen and women - we kick our heroes as soon as they reach the top - we trawl over snippets of information and trash people's reputations after they die.

These people are there for our entertainment. The fact that information is being freely bandied about on the web only makes the injunctions which these inevitably rich people obtain more farcical. Internet gossip makes the theatre of the rich and famous more amusing - let it roll!
