Poll question: Best animated movie to watch with your kid
I don't mean the kid movie you like best, or the one your kid likes best, but the one you most like your kid to watch.

1. MY FAVOURITE CARTOON MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 08:39 AM by La_Serpiente
IS

An American Tail

Steven Spielberg sure knows what he is doing.

I think Feifel's journey is relevant to today as well. Just like how he was searching for America, I think we are all now searching for America as well in this difficult, post 9-11 world.

5. Not to split hairs, but "An American Tail" wasn't Disney.
Don Bluth and his gang broke away from Disney to start their own studio.

Still a great movie, though.

9. I think Bluth et al would secretly have been flattered with the comparison
They'd probably never admit it, though.

27. For children?
I love PM, too, though I like Spirited Away a little better, but I wouldn't think of PM as a kids' film. Just my opinion. Guess I should have defined age better, huh?

37. Vin Diesel-- How could I forget?
I left too many great films off this poll. It's worthless. Besides, no one is voting for Mulan, so I'm sad. Iron Giant's a great choice.

8. I am a little surprised at the votes for finding Nemo
I guess it depends on the age of the children but that film is a bit violent for very young children. The barricuda eats the mother and the rest of the young, The sharks chase Nemo's father and companion around, and the whale, the gulls and one of the pelicans all try to eat them.

42. Au contraire
Even surrounded by violence, the main characters use other means to solve their problems. Often when the characters are too small to even consider fighting back. They get out of the whale by befriending him rather than making assumptions, they get out of the trouble with the shark without killing anything, they flee the seagulls by making friends with the pelicans, and they get out of the pelican simply by refusing to give in. These are great messages to teach children. As for the baracuda, that is horribly sad, but even there, it is not something kids should be unaware of. While that message may not be a happy one, it is certainly one all of us must learn somehow or another.

One feature of this movie that I find very appealing is that it preaches to both the kids and the parents, and succeeds on both levels while telling a charming story.

11. Kiki's Delivery Service or Spirited Away
Because they're so...non-corporate. Yes, I know Disney got its hooks in, but both of those shows still maintain something non-spoiled and different from the rest of the garbage they market to kids.

20. ICE AGE.
Hilarious, sweet and poigniant (sp?).

I watch it with one of the two girls once a month. We always laugh our asses off, and have a slight tear as Diego the Saber Tooth lies "dying" and says: "That's what you do in a herd: you watch out for each other."

There is something to be said for being a herd animal. Sniff.

He SOLD the rights to Disney, so he must have had a little interest in cashola. I say "little" with a great deal of sarcasm.

We have a DVD in our minivan (god, am I suburban these days or what?) because we take a lot of eight to ten hour drives. They watch that film over just about any other. I've heard it more times than I've seen it, even.

"The Pinchecliffe Grand Prix". It's a wonderful little Norwegian film from the 1970's. If you can actually unearth a copy of the video, (I found mine on e-bay) GET IT!!!! And watch it with your kids! It's delightful.

32. How about "Chicken Run"?
I haven't seen Finding Nemo yet, so I don't know. What I did see was Chicken Run, and I thought it was a great family movie; cute enough for the kids, witty enough for the adults. I've been a fan of Nick Park and his "Wallace & Gromit" shorts, and I was pleased when he was able to transfer his sense of humor so well to a whole different set of characters.

47. Classic Disney: "Fantasia." Modern Disney: "Beauty & the Beast"
"Fantasia" is one of the few Disney classics that doesn't have something in it to scare little kids, aside from "Night on Bald Mountain." However, since it's a movie with lots of parts, you can turn it off before that point if they're under 5, without losing the "plot." I love "Peter Pan," but some folks are sensitive about the portrayal of the Indians (though they're actually a lot better than in most movies of the time).

Contemporary classics-wise, "Beauty" and "Aladdin" are terrific, and not too frightening comparatively speaking. (I love "Hunchback," but talk about scary!) I also love "The Iron Giant," but not for little kids--7-8 seems about right.
