WinMX help NO FLAMES please
I don't have it; but I used to and then hubby told me it had too much potential for viruses. I loved it because I could find extremely rare vinyl mixes that I couldn't buy or get anywhere else. Does anyone still have this and is it ok (virus-free)now?

2. i had it recently...
and had no problem with viruses. I am assuming you have some sort of anti-virus program on your computer like I do, though. That may be why I had no problems...

3. I used it for a while
But use DC++ mostly now

WinMX isn't any more of a virus risk than any other file sharing client. Just be careful what you download and scan your download directory with a good AntiVirus program. Last time I used it it was spyware free, it was a pretty clean install

5. See; now I have that
and can't seem to get the damn thing to work. I think it shares ports with my Limewire; so if one is up the other isn't.

6. WinMX
I think it's still very popular in Europe, and thats why you can get such good import vinyl :) I agree. check out this site:

http://www.juno.co.uk <-- you can preview the mp3's there for the las test releases of vinyl, and often a few weeks later get them off of winMX. :-)

As for viruses in WinMX, all peer-to-peer software has that risk because you end up downloading stuff from other peoples computers, these files can contain viruses if they are programs, or if they are faked out music files, that are really scripts or programs in disguise.

I don't know of any specific vulnerabilities of WinMX but its very possible that there are even more risks with winMX, above the normal p2p file sharing risks. Perhaps a port is left open while running winMX that allows a malicious attacker to send data to your computer or remotely execute a program on your computer from their computer. (back door)

Hardware + software Firewalls are good, they stop many threats.

7. Not sure what I have
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 10:57 AM by lildreamer316
I have a HP Media center (came with Norton but I hate it& now it isn't really working) and I'm running Spysweeper too (catches most stuff) AND a pop-up blocker AND the blocker from the Google toolbar. Win xp of course. I hope I'm ok but SO knows better than me. I just REALLY need acess to that (winmx) library because hubby's job demands (he's a house/breaks DJ).
Edit:THANKS for the Juno link! That is PERFECT!!

9. Glad you like juno, its my favorite music site
I've bought lots of stuff from them they are great.

A Hardware firewall is a little extra box that goes between your computer and the DSL router. Sometimes they are integrated? I havent bought one in a few years. They are pretty cheap these days a decent one will run you about 80-90 bucks. Also it lets you run multiple computers sharing the same internet connection.

Another suggestion is to uninstall WinMX & Limewire, reinstall winMX that may fix your problem.

10. Ok help
I wasn't very clear. Right now I have Limewire Pro ( I paid for it) and Soulseek (which dosen't work if I run limewire; it seems I have to disable Limewire to get it to work). I USED to have WinMX like 2 years ago. I have plenty of room on the coputer for all 3. Suggestions on keeping/not keeping soulseek? It just dosen't seem to work well but everyone keeps telling me it is great for house/breaks mixes; so I'd like to make it work.

A little light on the Americana stuff that I crave, but still....
