Band Played A Benefit Friday Night (Vanity Post) |
|
Had a good time. A local bass player has to have a quad bypass this week. So, we threw him a party/benefit where the proceeds will go toward his copay. (He's got decent benefits, but his share will still be a few thousand.)
We weren't the host band, so we went on second, but we played as a three piece, then a four piece, then brought up a friend on guitar (i went back to bass), then brought up the guest of honor to play bass while i played piano (plus my other two guys on guitar and drums).
We ended up playing about 65 minutes, which was longer than we were supposed to, but the reaction was so good we thought, "Tough! Bill's having a good time, so we're staying the course!" (Sorry for the Bushism!)
When we got done, the next band asked if they could wait 20 minutes or so, because they didn't want to go on right after us. Talk about an ego feed! Given how full musicians are of themselves, to have guys that want to wait because of how good we were, speaks VOLUMES!
Anyway, a good time was had by all. Best part, all we brought were guitars and basses. Everything else was there so my MS riddled legs didn't have to move anything heavy. Fun stuff! The Professor

2. FAN-tastic Professor...... |

Isn't it a great feeling, getting up on stage and being appreciated?
Rock On.
Oh and....glad to hear that the quad bypass recipient was feeling well enough to rock, as well.

3. Yeah, Me Too! You'd Never Know By Being With Him |
|
He feels ok, but has blockage between 75 and 90% in 4 arteries, and he works construction. So, he's a thrombosis waiting to happen. He's only 50.
Better he does this sooner than later. The Professor

You did a good thing, so you were rewarded by sounding extra good!
One time I did a karaoke benefit show for a singer who had a real bad stroke! We went around and collected gifts from the folks in the area and had an auction in the middle of the show! The lady who ran the club served free food and donated fifty cents a beer to the guy! We were supposed to play for three hours on a Sunday afternoon but ended up playing for seven hours! After the third hour, I passed the hat and donated the money to the guy! I got him four hats full of money, one hat full an hour!
The lady who ran the bar made a pile of money and she gave the guy a hundred dollar bill at the end of the night plus the beer money! We had two hundred fifty people show up for the benefit and most stayed till closin'! After that we packed that club about every night and did so for four years! We ended up getting $3,000. for the guy his sister told me next day! The money we raised paid his house payments until his SSI started paying him!
A year later I had a bypass and the folks at the club were great to me at my own benefit!
