Discussion question for beer lovers: Your three favorite US brewers?
Mine:

- Rogue Ales Brewery, Newport, Oregon. Creative, inventive, great packaging (painted labels).

- Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Chico, California. Great variety. They make my favorite everyday beer (SN Pale Ale) and my all time favorite beer in the world (SN Celebration Ale).

- Goose Island Brewing Company, Chicago. The little brewery that could. They make a brown ale and a bitter that will make your tongue slap your brain.

What say you? C'mon! This isn't that obscure a topic, is it?

1. I love beer.
Sierra Nevada Brew Co.

The makers of Flat Tire, can't remember their name, but they have a wonderful Wheat Ale.

And, my own stock, I brew specifically Flander's Auld Bruin, a wonderful brown ale. I am working on making it a fruited ale soon enough. Ahhh, I am brewing again next week sometime to replenish my stock.

2. It's Fat Tire, is it not?

Sam Adams and the Anchor Steam folks are good, and Pete's Wicked also. Not sure my faves though. Karl Strauss in San Diego is awesome.

I just finished brewing a very light crowd-pleaser pale ale for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. Next will be a Scottish ale, to have ready for the fall.

Brew on, dawg.

Add on edit: Care to share a recipe?

9. Yeah, I'll PM you one that I'm working on.
I'm debating on adding dark Candi sugar to the brew next time, but since it is my first time adding it, I wonder if it'll be any good. Any tips?

13. Thanks! Looking forward to it.
Never used candi sugar, dark or light, but it's in one of the recipes I'm planning to try.

21. Right. The old-school Brewers logo had a meaning.
The fingers formed an "M" and thumb and palm were a "B" and it was so cleverly formed into a glove and ball!

Schell's is a great brewery.

I'd even add Point to the midwest brewery hall of fame.

Add on edit: from your own state of Iowa, Millstone Brewery makes some nice stuff too.

but where's Millstone Brewery? I've had beer from the Amana Colonies and the old Dubuque Star Brewery that was top notch.

23. Mississippi Mud Black and Tan, Celis White (when it was made in Austin)
And a microbrew in Albuquerque, Turtle Mountain, who makes, or did last time I was there, a dark, smooth beer whose name I've forgotten, but that was as perfect a beer as I've ever had.

I haven't had Celis White since it started being made in Michigan. Hope it's still good.

25. New Belgium (Ft. Collins), Bridgeport (PDX, OR), Portland Brewing (PDX)
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 10:38 PM by swag
New Belgium: can't get enough Fat Tire

Bridgeport: I'm very sentimental about times spent at their main pub quaffing off the cask. Election night 1992 being one example of the beautiful times there.

Portland Brewing Co: Favorite holding in Consumer Staples sector. The Blues are Number One.

The cioppino they serve at the Newport pub down on Yaquina Bay is the best stew of any kind I have ever had anywhere.

27. It's hard to narrow it down to three....
But let's do a mini-tour of the West Coast....

www.fishbrewing.com - Local favorite (about a mile away) A bunch of great beers, mostly named after fish and other nautical sort of things.

www.deschutesbrewery.com - Bend Oregon. Home of my alltime favorite, "Obsidian Stout". Great lineup of regular beers, and a few seasonals like the winter beer "Jubelale"

www.avbc.com - Anderson Valley Brewing Company. Boonville CA. Discovered this product line on my road trip of the coast last summer. Their "Hop Ottin IPA" might just be the best IPA on the planet, and their Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout will make you say "Samuel Smith who?". Unfortunately, avbc beers are rare up on this end of the coast, and my annual roadtrip is off due to gas and other economic factors.

I have my favorites, but I doubt you could go wrong with anything from any of the above breweries.
