Mercury Spill Shuts Down Soap Opera Set
<snip>

NEW YORK -- A blood pressure device being used as a prop on the set of "Guiding Light" broke apart just before the taping of an emergency room scene.

Someone apparently dropped it, and a small amount of mercury spilled onto the stage floor.

The show's executive producer says the staged emergency turned into a real-life emergency. No one was hurt, but a hazmat person says elevated levels of mercury were found in the air.

The studio where the soap is taped had to be shut down for at least 24 hours. The studio will be tested again Friday to see if it can be reopened.

Mercury is a poisonous metal that can damage the brain, nervous system and kidneys. Exposure can cause tremors, irritability and memory loss.
