1. I've seen the pixelranger "look" elsewhere,
especially the too tiny pixel font. I can't read that shit and won't even try.

6. Flash isn't a joke. Perhaps your experiences with it have been
but some people are making some wonderful things with it.

10. You MUST admit that 99.9999% of Flash usage
is gratuitous, pretentious, and annoying, if you're any kind of Web professional, and I know you are.

I am sure you are correct that some people are making wonderful things with it (animated cartoons, for one), but the VAST majority of it is what I like to call "Art Director's Revenge."

You know that's true. Come on, it's just me you're talking to, I'm your friend, you can admit it.

Redstone

PS: I go too far the other way. I won't allow my customers to use Flash in their websites. If they insist, they have to go elsewhere for Web design. So far, nobody's insisted. Go ahead and call me a dinosaur; I probably deserve it.

12. I respect that approach
I believe in extreme simplicity for web sites, and flash use often *IS* gratuitous. It should be reserved for designers who want to impress/annoy other designers. But eye candy will always sell. The customers think it's supposed to make them cool because the web designers tell them it does.

13. I try to avoid linking bad design with a particular method of delivery
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:04 PM by DS1
Flash gets its bad rap because it's easy to download and make shit move around. So it often is overused, gratuitous, pretentious etc.

It's still a very capable software package, it's the self-control of its user base that's the problem. Personally I'm the opposite on the animated web cartoons thing, I think that vast majority of them are junk. It's the odd clean and efficient interface that I run across which makes me enjoy navigating and exploring a flash based site.

28. I agree...
.. anybody that uses Flash on the home page as a sort of animated motif is more interested in himself than he is the web user.

The second link in the OP - web masturbation at it's most annoying :)

9. Works cool for Game Boy, X-Box or the latest Bruce Willis movie...
websites.

HTML in E-mail rocks too!.

Sometimes I miss websites when they were just ordinary black text on a grey background. ;(

What's a guy supposed to do?

A shitty site laid out in Photoshop will look equally shitty in html or flash - which was my point above.

thousands of lame, horrid Flash-based websites on the unsuspecting public by putting such a weapon in the hands of people who have NO talent, so they buy "You Too Can Build Fancy Websites With A Click Of The Mouse Button" software, but at least they're cynically honest with the name of the website: "TrendyFlash."

I'll be they're secretly ashamed of themselves, like the people who wrote the code for Microsoft Front Page should be, but what the hell, everybody's gotta make a buck...

I bet they were ashamed of such crap, but on the other hand, given my financial situation, I was secretly jealous of them for coming up with it first

29. Yup. I'd have done the same, given the opportunity. Money talks,
and bullshit walks, after all.

Of course, there are limits to what I'll do for a buck, but after all, the people who came up with that software didn't desing those hideous websites themselves, they just made it possible, so...yeah, I'd sell that software if I had invented it.
