Could be a side effect of a drug you're taking, an inner ear thing, or something else (I know, helpful, right?). I got it from an antibiotic I was taking at the time.

I have it, as do my dad and grandmother (so, my doc's not worried it's a tumor or anything). I rarely get it while sitting, though -- escalators (especially walking up a turned-off escalator), airplanes, not-to-code staircases, IMAX theaters...pretty much anything that futzes with my sense of balance vs. what I'm seeing will trigger an episode, and then I'll be prone to them more randomly for days.

I've had this happen for about 20 years - I first noticed it in my early 20's but I've never seen a doctor for it because it's so hard to describe. Sometimes an especially chaotic movie or television scene will bring it on, swings (can't sit on a swing), rapidly scrolling on the computer, etc.
It's a wierd and uncomfortable feeling and I find I have to kind of hold onto something for a minute and work to regain my equilibrium. Luckily, it doesn't seem to occur while driving though I've always kind of worried about it in the back of my mind.

I usually have to right myself after getting off an escalator, though.
The lights in Vegas (I'm there every 18 months or so for business) are probably the worst triggers, especially considering I've already had the airplane and lots of escalators to deal with.
