What kind of tapes were they? Would anyone else have enjoyed them? If so, go fetch them out of the trash before they get mixed in with the garbage, and donate them to a thrift store or something. Unless they were filled with copyrighted material that you taped for your own use, of course. You don't want the MPAA beating down your door with a subpeona.

The visual quality is piss poor and I had bought the DVDs too.

The MPAA has nothing to worry about, rest assured.

I asked you how you disposed of them...and thought about how I should. Checked on my local recycling center, and they don't seem to address the issue. So, I kept looking...and found this:
