In the spirit of Veterans day |
|
I would like to thank all the veterans on DU for their service, then and now, and also for the day off tommorrow.
11 am tommorow, Paris time, is a scared moment. Does anyone know what time 11 am in paris is in Maryland?

Veterans rule. The law office where I 'work' (I am there right now) has a lot of WWII and Korean War Veteran clients. They have done interviews for me that i have turned into term papers and such. Most are really great men.

But I wouldn't change a thing!
on edit: I keep thinking of things to add on this thread. I live next to Ft. Knox. The school system here invites all veterans to the schools on Veteran's Day. No speeches required. The schools serve a special lunch that is free to all vets and their companions as a way of saying thank you.
Every year, my wife who recently retired from teaching in the local middle school, came home a little teary on Veteran's Day, even though I always made it a point to share lunch with her that day.
Her dad: PT Boats WWII, South Pacific
My dad: B-17 pilot WWII, European Theater 2 tours (fought like hell to get the second, I'm told)
My stepfather: PT Boats WWII, South Pacific
Both on PT Boats knew JFK

Was in the USAF Band. Got to Viet Nam by default. It was a TDY (temporary duty) thing for about a week. Morale tour. I saw enough that it gave me a real sense of what the guys in the mud went through.
Good and bad things happened there, but on the whole, I was and still am, proud of our military men and women of all ages.

15. Thank you. My unit never got into combat, because the ground war |
|
was over so quickly. Not like now. I nearly had a Scud missile dropped on my head, but that doesn't make me a war hero.

19. Nope. King Khalid Military City. Took a near miss from a Scud about |
|
two weeks after I got there. We were assigned from Germany, and had no desert warfare training. We were on our desert train-up when the ground war started, and returned from the field the day the ceasefire was declared. Hm. That was my war, taken for all in all.

20. I keep thinking of stuff that's I feel needs to be said |
|
My stepfather was to graduate H.S. in 1942. December 8, 1941 all the males in his senior class (18 of 'em) enlisted and dropped out of H.S. 17 went into the Navy, one went Army. 17 went to PT Boats, probably the most dangerous combat duty in the war. One went into combat engineers.
The Navy crew all game home after the war, minor wounds, not even a lost limb. The combat engineer was killed in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944.
Did I mention that the school, Mt. St. Joseph (run by the Urseline Sisters of Maple Mount, KY) called each young man's name and presented their diplomas to their families at the May 1942 commencement ceremony?
