Which groups/artists recorded "Gloria?"
The one from the 60's, that is. Know what I mean?

So far I've got:

Them

Blues Magoos

Jimi Hendrix

The Doors

Know of any more?

Thanks,

Floog

19. Not only that,

it was elided with the title track from Horses (which song contained the prophetically resonant line, "the boy looked at Johnny"), my favorite Patti Smith album. Cover by Robert Mappletorpe:

14. Right title, wrong song.
Laura Branigan did sing "Gloria", but it wasn't the classic 60s version.

Hey, I'll give you 100 points for "best alternative answer"!

11. U2's Gloria is a different song
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 07:59 PM by Roland99
They do incorporate parts of the older Gloria in some songs, though. But I'm not sure if they ever did a full version of it.

Oh wait, there's a live version I have with them singing it with Van Morrison and, I think, Lou Reed?

23. The Eire Apparent did Gloria live on stage in 1968
I saw them in Atlanta, as they played Gloria as the first tune in the concert, before Hendrix came on stage. They opened for Hendrix on the road in that 1968 tour. The Eire Apparent was an Irish group that was supposedly popular in Europe. I don't know if they ever recorded that version, however. I also saw the Shadows Of Knight do Gloria in Savannah, Georgia in 1967. Both versions sounded very similar. There's supposedly another Northern Irish group that recorded Gloria called "The Wheels" but I've never heard it.

26. here you go
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 08:55 PM by Tom Kitten
The Grateful Dead (from Dick's Picks, Volume 21)
The 101er's (from Elgin Avenue Breakdown)
Johnny Thunders (from Born Too Loose)
Simple Minds (from Dancing Barefoot EP)
Rickie Lee Jones (from Live at Red Rocks)

Also the Pandoras on "Battle of the Garages" did a song called "Melvin" but all they did was change the name... other than that it is exactly the same song.

(on ed) There is also a weird but really cool Cambodian version on the cd "Cambodia Rocks".
