If Che Guevara was still alive
do you think he would post here in the Lounge?

I know, another rhetorical question!

1. No, he'd be a GDer or GD:P.... he'd probably actually be banned
considering his views on armed revolution. He was a radical rather than a progressive.

... he would be demanding a piece of the action.

Probably have his likeness copyrighted, too.

9. My observation's been that most famous people roll over in their graves
at some time or another due to some historical irony or another.

5. Probably as much as Osama posts. Che was a terrorist.
Romanticized up the ying-yang, but a terrorist. (OK, maybe a Freedom-Fighter...depending on your point of view.)

11. They weren't all that friendly in the end.
Che realized that the ComIntern was a failure.... that Cuba had become the Soviet's bitch just as they had been America's under Baptista. Instead of supplying the U.S. with sugar it now supplied the Soviet bloc with sugar. No difference. Fidel was practical (and content with power) enough to accept this reality. Che was to idealistic to accept reality and ran off to South America. I don't know much about it but that is how I understand it in a nutshell.

15. I just got the Jon Lee Anderson biography
a couple of days ago. It is long and promises to be an interesting read.

Che was a complex figure, a great leader but a lousy politician, an inspiring idealist but a vengeful ideologue.

Just like the rest of us here in the lounge! B-)

It is amusing to wonder just what he would think of the t-shirts and all the uninformed idolatry. Reminds me of the line from Hannah and Her Sisters: "If Jesus came back and saw what's going on in His name, He'd never stop throwing up."

but I seriously doubt that he'd be so fondly remembered if he hadn't been so very handsome, and had he not worn a beret with such great aplomb.

If Trotsky had been better looking, he'd be turning up in cheap, Chinese-made T-shirts all over the world, too. I'm just sayin' . . .

But don't dis Trotsky, Heidi, or there'll be some major ass kicking in the Lounge.

33. It was a prop to Trotsky.
I love Trotsky _at least_ as much as you do, Khash, so do don't threaten me with an ass kickin. If he'd been half as good looking or as "fashionable" as Che, we'd all be wearing Trotsky T-shirts today, and Trotsky would be cursing us from the grave for our commercialism.

May I PM you with the name of what I found to be an absolutely excellent Trotsky reference (four volumes) that sits on our bookshelf?

So would I but in a very different way :)

Actually I owe him a debt of gratitude. When I was in High School and hated everybody and everything he inspired me to actually do something, to get political, to revolt.

I'm still revolting and I owe it all to him.

32. If Che Guevara was still alive
He would have outlived the guy who took the photo of his corpse

from Democracy Now!, 19 August 2005

Che Photographer Freddy Alborta Dies
"...Bolivian photographer Freddy Alborta, famous for his image of revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara lying dead, has died in La Paz. He passed away on Wednesday at the age of 73. In 1967, Alborta was one of a group of journalists allowed to view Guevara's body after he was captured and executed by CIA backed forces. The picture of the leftist guerrilla, with his eyes open and surrounded by soldiers, was first published in a Bolivian newspaper and then transmitted by newswire around the world as proof Che was dead..."

As for the posting, I think he'd be too busy with his own blog to post at DU

36. Come on Jimmy, that's not fair
He was passionate, committed, dedicated....

But then so are you. One of the many reasons I love you.

So he was a communist revolutionary. But he did it with beauty. And you are a single mom and a punker chick and a total sweetheart. And you also do it with beauty,

Respect where respect is due. There is too little beauty in this world - when it shows up, we should celebrate it.

Khash.
