1. Kasparov in first virtual chess match
Former world chess champion Gary Kasparov plays against the computer "X3D Fritz" this week in a virtual match in which the board is in cyberspace and the pieces are moved by voice command.

The event marks the first time man and machine have battled over a hessboard "in total virtual reality", according to the International Computer Games Association and the United States Chess Federation.

The four games, on November 11, 13, 16 and 18 at the New York Athletic Club, will be broadcast live on ESPN and on the internet at www.x3dchess.com.

5. 2:30 EST Kasparov up material
But the computer seemingly gave it up on purpose. Knight file open against Kasparov's king (on queen side)...Kasparov has well placed knight at f5.

Very open game. There will be massive mating attacks for both sides.

6. Kasparov trading down his attacking pieces
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 02:45 PM by BullGooseLoony
trading attacking position to bring it to an endgame and mop up with his two rooks against one. Needs to trade queens.

7. He's playing pretty well so far.
No major mistakes.

He should be able to pull this out, if he can trade queens and keep his rooks.

8. Position looking slightly drawish
but is still plenty dynamic. I don't think Kasparov will allow this to come down to a drawing position anyway, as he is white. He needs a good win to start here. Still looking to trade queens. Looks like he's considering repositioning his rooks instead of attempting the trade right away...also if black accepted trade immediately it would give black a passed pawn protected by the bishop.

10. Black's bishop defending f pawn from doubled rooks
is pinned to black's queen by white's queen....black's move.

11. Interesting withdrawal.
Black moved the queen back. I wonder if Kasparov can capitalize on that.

12. Black seemingly has given up the initiative....
White may want to start pushing his kingside pawns to break up the black kingside.

13. Very aggressive rook move there....
he's maintaining pressure on the black queen, steering the game away from drawing lines. Definitely not a conservative move.
