Scarlett Johansson crashed into a woman and her two daughters last Friday while swerving to get away from paparazzi who were chasing her near Disneyland, California. An eyewitness said, "The front of Scarlett's Mercedes damaged the side of the other car pretty badly. Scarlett looked really shaken up and when both cars pulled over in a safe spot, she apologised profusely to the other woman. After that, they spent around 40 minutes on their phones, sorting out all of their insurance and legal paperwork." Scarlett's publicist, Marcel Pariseau, confirmed, "The fender bender was induced by the paparazzi, who chased her for 45 minutes." This is why all celebrities should have rocket launchers installed into their cars like James Bond. Not only would it result in the action-packed deaths of paparazzi, it would also make for some pretty sweet entertainment for spectators. I challenge you to watch Scarlett Johanson blow up some paparazzi with her car rockets and not have a good time.

But Scarlett should have driven more responsibly. I understand why she wanted to get away from them, but her driving like that obviously causes crashes.

and countless other celebrity rags 25%. I'm sorry, I know that sounds harsh because there are probably people here who enjoy those magazines. And, admittedly, I will page through one if it's around. But the paparazzi wouldn't be so rabid if people weren't buying all this crap.

A friend of mine gave me a couple of old US magazines to take on a flight and I was so grossed out by them I couldn't even take them with me. There was spread after spread of weird, unflattering pictures of stars eating, grocery shopping, taking the kids to school, dropping off movies, picking of dry cleaning, etc. And each picture had a caption like "They pick up their dry cleaning!" or "They stretch after eating!" or "They yawn when they're tired!" as if it was just SO BIZARRE that these people were actual human beings. And of course, if any of them had a hair out of place or an old t-shirt on, a big stink about their appearance just had to be raised. It made me feel dirty just looking at them.

You know, I understand that celebrities need to expect a certain amount of attention as part of their job. But I don't think anyone deserves glaring scrutiny of every pore on their body 24/7. My brother became an actor because acting is something he has to do. He was born to do it. But I think he's pretty glad that he's not "A-list" because he gets to do what he loves but he also gets to keep a little bit of his privacy. Usually people who see him think he's someone they know, not an actor. I was walking around CostCo with him and this guy was insisting that my brother was his surgeon for some operation he'd had. He was adamant, even after my brother assured him he wasn't a surgeon but he was on tv. It was weird.

The other thing that irks me about those magazines is that they make celebrities out of talentless imbeciles who do nothing but pose for paparazzi (i.e. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie) or who have put out a couple of bad pop albums purchased exclusively by 13 y.o. girls (i.e. Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Hillary Duff, etc.). Why should I give a shit that some trailer trash "singer" is pregnant by some lazy, greasy good-for-nothing who is barely finished knocking up some other chick?

but I think people who are celebrities have the same right to privacy I enjoy. I don't consider my 'right' to know or junky tabloid's 'right' to gather and publish tittle tattle to override someone else's right to move about freely, unmolested. JMHO

I really can't imagine what it would be like to have people following you all the time, taking photos, etc. It's got to suck. No question. But, let's face it. The paparazzi can "chase" all they like. But they're not cops. They can't force you to stop. And they really can't force you to speed away. She could just as easily have driven to wherever she was going and gotten on with her day. Maybe if she bored them silly, they'd go away. Maybe if she drove to a police station to lodge a complaint, they would go away. Maybe if she just went home to take a nap, they'd leave her alone. Yeah, it's frustrating. But that's no reason to become a maniac behind the wheel as a result. And I like Scarlet Johansen, and there are times I can't believe Princess Diana is dead. But get real.

Acting is what he was born to do and he would be wasting his talents if he were in a different profession. But I've been with him when people come and make inappropriate comments to him in front of my little nephew. I've read some of the creepy fan mail he's received. He's pretty good-natured about it but he's also not super A-list so he knows it could be much worse, and probably is for someone like Scarlett.

But anyway, why should someone be subjected to constant public scrutiny every minute of every day of their lives just because they're in movies? Why should they be hounded by paparazzi while taking their kids to school? Why should they have to make sure their hair and clothes and makeup are perfect when they take their trash out, just in case someone is hiding behind the bushes? Of course there are the media whores who'll do anything for attention, but why does being an actor automatically mean you have no right to even an ounce of privacy? I'm sorry, I just don't agree with that.

Yes, your probably right that Scarlett would've been better off driving to the police station. But perhaps, just perhaps, she was freaked out and not thinking straight. Not to mention she's, what, 19 years old? I think "no pity here" is pretty harsh unless you've never made any judgment errors in your life, especially when you were that age.

I have a relative who's not an actor, but who is publically known, and he gets a certain amount of irritating/weird attention. But that's in exchange for the extremely positive attention he also gets -- and which far outweighs it. I assume it's the same for Scarlett.

I'm just saying that in a profession that relies on being loved by masses of strangers, you have to take the bad love with the good love... or you're not cut out for it. And there's no excuse for endangering the public by speeding recklessly around in your expensive car.

(obviously, stalking is over the line, but being photographed without makeup should be part of the job description...)
