Berroa, Willis voted rookies of the year (MLB) |
|
NEW YORK, Nov. 10 — Kansas City shortstop Angel Berroa beat New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui in the closest AL Rookie of the Year vote in 24 years. Florida pitcher Dontrelle Willis won the NL award. http://famulus.msnbc.com/famulusspt/ap11-10-110331.asp?spt=mlb&vts=111020031419Damn, I wa shoping for Rocco Baldelli to win in the AL. I'm so glad Matsui didn't get it. It should go to a true rookie.

Willis didn't even pitch enough innings to qualify for the ERA stats!(innings pitched equals or exceeds team games played). Willis only pitched 160 innings
Podsednik deserved it. Everyday player.
Bias of the eastern media confirmed again.

2. Willis 14 wins, Webb 10 |
|
Webb was fourth in the NL and sixth in the Majors in ERA (2.89), while his 172 strikeouts in 180 2/3 innings easily led all rookies and placed him 10th in the NL. His 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings ratio was seventh in the Majors, while his .212 batting average against was third-best in the NL.

3. It should have been Webb and Matsui |
|
until they change the rules of eligibility Matsui was a rookie last season. And he was the best "rookie" in the AL. Clearly Brandon Webb was a better pitcher than Willis, he should have won. Then Posednik then Dontrelle.

4. Berroa deserved it over Matsui... |
|
but Willis robbed Webb.
Matsui was a little better (but not much) than Berroa with the bat, but he was a defensive liability in left field (the second least-demanding position on the diamond). Berroa, on the other hand, played shortstop -- and pretty damn well, I might add. Berroa also stole 21 bases, and was caught only 5 times.
The only edges Matsui has are OBP (yes, the most important offensive statistic, but it's still only part of the picture) and RBI (hell, I'd have 100 RBI hitting behind Jeter, Johnson, Soriano, Giambi, Posada, Williams, et. al.).
