My son is entering high school this year. They had an orientation night at school tonight which lasted 2-1/2 hours. They pretty much did the whole dog and pony show, going over important stuff like Mission statements, the school's "vision", trotting out the cheerleaders and the marching band, gave every Tom, Dick and Harry staff member 10 minutes at the microphone to blather on.
Not covered? Attendance policy, what kind of student services are available. They kept referencing pages in the student handbook, which none of us has received....It was all touchy, feely, and rah rah, with no substance whatsoever.
Why the fuck do they even bother?

2. Must. Repeat. Mission. Statement. |
|
Vision. Very. Important.
I hope you all remember the school fight song, or it will be a long 4 years.

4. I am one of these people that would rather get a handbook |
|
and read it on my own, sign something stating that I read it, then be responsible for the information; rather than go to these dog and pony shows.
I am over it now, but it made for a good rant.

9. They're assuming that about 10-20% of the student body... |
|
are troublemakers who will give them unnecessary problems and grief. Hence the meeting is pre-emptive revenge on the parents. If you are one of the majority of parents whose kids are well behaved, then consider yourself collateral damage.
Just a theory.

10. I Got a Waterballoon In The Face At Orientation |
|
for 7th grade. I was a white kid who was going to be attending a predominantly black school and the black kids in front of me stood up and threw a waterballoon in my face as I sat in the auditorium.
My wimpy ass teacher did absolutely nothing. I was so mad and scared at the same time I did nothing except stare at the punks who threw it.
Afterwards, my classmates thought I was a hero for staring down the punks in the face of a possible riot. I told my parents and they agreed to let me skip the black school and for that matter skip 2 grades as well. I moved onto 9th grade at a private school.

11. Ah, the mysterious "handbook." |
|
We used to hear tales of such a thing. Always referred to in hushed tones, it held the power to bring our young lives to ruin.
Like the Grail, its existence is perhaps more legendary than real.
