What did you do on your first date with your SO?
DH is a pretty shy guy, so going out for coffee or something would have been a bad first date. We went to an arcade and played video games. We were both 23 at the time, and we were the oldest people there who were not accompanying children. We had a great time. No pressure to make conversation while you're shooting at aliens.

Then we went back to my place and. . .played Trivial Pursuit. Two games, and he beat me both times. He was (and still is) the only person to ever beat me twice at Trivial Pursuit. Hardly anybody beats me once. So to find a guy who not only enjoyed the game but was better at it than I was. . .it was pretty much a done deal right there. :)

We moved in together six months later and got married a year and a half ago.

What's your story?

1. We were a blind date
But we talked for about an hour on the phone the night he called me. He took me out to dinner. And the next morning, he took me out to breakfast.

2. An "in-house" date
Chinese take-out; watched "Brazil" on tape; I said, "I'm not going to fall in love you or anything" somewhere in there; screwed like rabbits. A week later I was in L-O-V-E. That was 17 years ago.

3. When TXLib met KCDem...
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 06:13 PM by TXlib
We met through ballroom dance.

I met her at a "Welcome Back" dance at the beginning of the school year in September 1996. I danced with her a few times and talked to her. She said she had just come back from a summer in Russia; I asked her if she wanted to come over sometime to see my pictures from Russia. (Cheesy, yes, but effective...) By the end of the dance, I knew her first name, and what she studied, but had neglected to get a phone number. D'oh!

I looked at the sign-in sheet later, and saw 4 people with her name. Hoping one was hers, I looked all of them up in the school's electronic phonebook, trying to find one who was a grad student, and in the right department.

I found a match, and still not certain if it was the right person, I emailed her, and told her how much fun I had with her at the dance, and asked if she would come to our practice the next day.

She emailed back, and said yes. I asked her if I could hitch a ride with her, since it was off-campus (and I could direct her there). She gave me a ride there.

We emailed her the next day and asked if she'd be at the first class; we met up the next day at the class. Before it ended, we exchanged phone numbers.

About 30 minutes after I got home that evening, I called her, and asked if she wanted to come over and see those Russia pictures. It was getting late, and it was a school night, so I wasn't too hopeful. But she said yes!

I literally did a victory dance after I hung up, waiting for her to arrive. She stayed til about 2 or 3 a.m., and was a good girl, despite my best massage efforts.

I proposed about three months later.

22. "We emailed her" ?
Um, is there something you're not telling me? Did the voices tell you to or something?

Yup, very sweet story. Rather than wining and dining me, he got me drunk and fed me mac and cheese.

Sounds a lot like your husband is in a state of mind with "we" because he sees himself as being inseparable from you....just my two cents :-)

4. We saw the movie Grease, had pizza, and went to a carnival
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 06:05 PM by lunabush
Grease was new at the time. We marvel that we did more in that date than we typically did in the next 3 dates. A very wholesome first date. btw, Grease sucked then, too.

5. um
no real first 'date'. We met while we were studying in Florence, took a weekend trip to Capri and fell in love. She's a new yorker and I am a southerner, we lived nowhere near each other. We spent less than a week together and when we returned to the states we both moved to fla and are going on three years now. looking to be married next summer.
this brief a description doesn't do justice to our story. it still blows my mind how absurd and fortunate our being together is.

9. A year ago this coming Sunday - 11/16
There was a Noreaster blowing in NYC, but we had met online and agreed to meet a really cute little eatery in the West Village. We were there for 3 hours, it was still rainy and windy when we left the place, we walked down the street and kissed goodbye. It was definitely love at first site. We hope to get a place together next summer.

11. We say our company's attorney play in a jazz band at a coffee house
He's a right wingnut, but he's a good bass player. He and a small group of other attorneys play every so often and donate the meager sums they make to charities, usually Children's Hospital.

Before ZenGirl and I even knew we were dating, we went to see his band play at this little hole-in-the-wall coffee shop. It was very romantic!! :loveya:

12. The bar I worked at in New Orleans
was insane at Mardi Gras. We all worked 16-20 hour shifts for a few weeks straight. Every year after Mardi Gras, we had a big party at a different restaurant that was also owned by the bar owners. The restaurant was known for its seafood. My SO was my date to the party. She got in the car and proceeded to tell me that she hates seafood. I laughed and asked if she wanted me to take her home right then. Turns out that she had just never had good seafood and she had a blast at the party.

23. My first date was supposed to be Star Wars.
We went out to dinner with another couple and then drive to the movie. We were late so the men dropped me and the other woman off at the movie so we could get tickets. I get to the ticket booth and realize it was not Star Wars which I had already seen. The other woman had snookered everyone to going to a documentary on women who survived in the west. It told me much about my husband that he just laughed and went along to the movie.

Our second date was to a protest in SF against apartheid.

19. Um, took drugs?
I met Mrs. Bear right before spring break in '72. After break, I took her out, but she didn't know who I was when I got to her door (thought I was somebody else w/the same first name). We then proceeded to take chocolate mescaline and sit under a large sheet while my roommate made bird sounds.

We've been married 28 years... :)

21. Met her at a party in Isla Vista. She went with me to my place
to get another pack of cigs. Next week invited her over for dinner (I fixed fried chicken). Then it took me a year to talk her into getting married. That was 35 years ago, and I now I bake the chicken and no longer smoke.

I invited him to dinner at my house Tuesday night (stir-fry). We talked for hours, I kissed him and we went to bed, made wonderful love and laughed like fools. It was 6 months before I moved in with him, but we've been together practically everyday for the last 15 years...
