My grandma is in the hospital again...might need heart surgery.
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 08:25 PM by Sean Reynolds
In November of last year my grandma went into the hospital and we found out she had congestive heart failure. Right before Thanksgiving she went back into the hospital because of it (her lungs were collecting fluid. Things started looking up when again she went to the hospital in December. Things REALLY took a turn for the worse and went as far as to call the priest for the last rights. She had gone through some heart surgery where they did fix a valve. But she bucked up and rebounded, finally being released from the hospital a week before Christmas.

Well it's basically LAST YEAR all over again! She's back in the hospital, her congestive heart failure is acting up again and she MAY need open heart surgery to replace a valve. Sadly, she's 75 and I fear surgery would kill her! :(

My grandma and I have been close since I was a baby. In 1996 when my grandpa had a stroke we moved in with her to help take care of him. He died in March of 2002 and we've continued to take care of my grandma. Basically for the past seven years I've seen her almost daily and she's become a second mom (since my dad has been lost in booze for most of my life). Losing her would just be a devastating blow and I DO NOT think I could deal with it.

I am asking DUers from the bottom of my heart TO PLEASE SEND GOOD VIBES. I would gladly give up my heart if I could. :(

4. Sean, I'm sorry to hear this.
My grandma was very sick and just passed away in August so I know how hard this probably is for you. Hang in there, I am sending positive vibes for your family

6. Best wishes to you and your family.
It hurts like hell....but, the best thing is do what you can to make all the rest of her days, days of joy. Play her favorite music, films, foods...whatever you know she enjoys. If that happens to be talking to her grandson, then that's definitely something you can provide in spades. ;)

7. Sean, don't give up hope.
My mother (83 years old) had congestive heart failure, then had an operation to replace two valves and a pacemaker put in.

She did well after the operation, then took a turn for the worse and spent five months in intensive care and a month in rehab.

She is now back home with my father, trying to get the house back to the way it was when she left it -- wants to do everything herself, just as busy as can be.

There were several times in the past six months that I was sure she wasn't going to make it, but she did.

You would be surprised at the strength there is in these great old ladies!

9. You've had quite the gift.
I just hope it continues. Actually I WISH that I had the chance to have my grandparents near me. One side is still alive, and they helped raise me (Two periods during my parent's disputes. One in Elementary school, the other in HS) too...Yet I've had little other than phone contact over the last ten years...The last ten years may be too long.

I wish you and your grandma nothing but the best:-)
