A couple interesting political observations at Milwaukee Irish Fest |
|
The Milwaukee Irish was celebrating it's 25th anniversary last weekend, and the President of Ireland came to give an address. She received a standing ovation, and was warmly received. I remarked to my mother that isn't it interesting when she visits she gets a standing ovation and all he gets are a bunch of protesters with anti-Bush signs. Can you imagine it everyone else gets a "I kissed the Blarney Stone" T-shirts, and all he gets is "I went to Ireland and all I got were protesters".
Also another thing I saw and heard. I was at the Liam Clancy concert, and he sang a anti-war song with such passion it almost broke my heart. Then at the end he got a standing ovation. After everybody sat down he then said "there was Korea, then Vietnam, and now Iraq. When will we ever learn". After he said that a few people stood up again, but most just clapped and shouted "go Liam".
I love the Irish.

3. We went with family friends, |
|
My dad's best friend was born in Germany, and is a very proud German. We're German, too, for that matter, so it was fun just to goof off.

4. My family's German and Irish |
|
But I have always identified more with the Irish side. I am not a big polka fan, and whenever we would go to German Fest my mom would make me polka. So I guess that is why we don't really go any more. That and the place where I live has a big German community so there is a smaller German fest here.
