Tora! Tora! Tora! is on...for all of you WWII film buffs. |
|
It's almost over though. :-( It's on American Movie Classics.
A great line from that movie: "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Yep, that's what happens when you mis-time your attack to begin BEFORE your ambassador delivers the emporer's ultimatum. Ooops.

I'm just teasing! AMC has been running some really great old war movies in honor of Vets Day. Did you catch The Longest Day the other night? Man, what a good one!

I had read the book long before I ever saw the movie. Both are excellent.

But then I thought about all those poor Cub fans who thought just because they sat in a different chair the night the Cubs folded that they were responsible for the Cubbies downfall. On second (third?) thought, maybe I'll keep watching the Packers fumble up a storm.

Not to spoil it for you, but the Japanese did it.

I love that picture. Great stuff. I like most WW2 epics though.

:-( But, it was on fairly recently, and I caught it then. There are some excellent WWII movies (Midway notwithstanding).

Have they shown/going to show Battle of the Bulge?
I watched Longest Day yesterday. I'd forgotten about the one soldier who parachutes in, uses his cricket, waits and hears *click-click*; steps out relieved.. only to be shot. He looks up and says, but there were two clicks... then the german soldier moves into view, reloading his bolt-action rifle making a nice little *click-click* as he does. :scared:
Good stuff though.

A Zero just flew overhead, an Officer remarked "I'm going to report that guy for safety violations" just before the Zero dropped a bomb.
Great movie!

11. The guys at Ft. Shafter and Hickam are getting theirs now... |
|
...until the commercial. x(
I lived on Hickam for 3 years. Some of the WWII hangars are still there. Living in that proximity to Pearl Harbor probably started my WWII geekiness.

20. I was at Schofield Barracks when... |
|
... the movie was being filmed. The production people were trolling for extras on all the bases on the island. I guess they figured that getting military people would help their behavior be more authentic. I couldn't get time off for it, but the gig was good by soldiers' standards for 1968--$29 per day + meals + period cigarettes if one smoked. From what I heard, the 2nd unit directors were pretty cool--made the enlisted men officers and the officers enlisted men....
Cheers.

I remember the Boy Scout camp I went to on Oahu had some old gun emplacements and bunkers. Those were great fun for an 11-year-old kid. We were on the other side of the mountain from Waimea Falls.
Hawaii's got such great WWII-era history. Oh, brunch at the Royal Hawaiian doesn't suck either. ;-)
