What is the single greatest VIDEO GAME ever made?
Rules for this post...

1. Pick only ONE game.

2. If you have several in mind, judge the games against the standards of their times to decide which was best.

My pick...

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

This actually was not that hard a choice for me. This game lived up to and exceeded all the hype that preceeded it.

Peace,

I freakin' LOVED that game.

A close second would be Super Tecmo Bowl. That lived up to it's NES hype as well.

30. The Secret of Monkey Island
It's funny if you're a kid, even funnier if you're old enough to get all the jokes. How can anything compete with insult swordfighting? It's a long, involved graphic adventure with great dialogue and a lighthearted attitude throughout.

A close second to Thief: The Dark Project for its atmosphere and revolutionary approach to "sneaky" first-person gaming.

35. Wow
My votes are:

Civilization II (I was pretty awesome as well, but II was a knockout)
SSI Gold Box AD&D Games Champions of Krynn

I'm torn, but these two games were lightyears ahead of their time, and provided a deeper stimulation and meaning than merely shoot 'em up. They were groundbreaking in so many ways, and I wasted so many hours.

40. This is easy --> The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Epic is the word that comes to mind when I think of this game. The Hookshot.. the Hoverboots.. fishing.. racing from Lake Hylia to the top of the mountain with the eye drops.. floating into the canyon via chicken.. the Water Temple(!).. it's all so wondrous!

I'm 26 years old, and I'll be playing the Zelda games until I'm in the nursing home; I actually own several copies of each for preservation into the future.

As far as "best-ever" goes, I wonder if this new Zelda (Twilight Princess) might displace Ocarina as my #1 game.
If it lives-up to half of the hype.. (cue the Christopher Walken voice) "wow-e-wow-wow!"

41. Someone else already mentioned FF7.
So I'll go back to the 80s and say Metroid for the NES.

Although Legend of Zelda, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Contra and Double Dragon were all great and hugely influential, Metroid was definitely ahead of its time and perfect in every way.

most games that kick butt are the ones for old school Nintendo. I still like playing, even though you have to jimmy it around a bit to get it to work. I have three favs, though..

Castlevania
and yes, I agree with the orignal post, MARIO THREE!!! My favorite board was big land, although the gigantic nail-thrower guys always pissed me off.
