San Francisco Postpones Plan For Ski Jump
<snip>

SAN FRANCISCO --San Francisco is no winter wonderland -- at least for a couple weeks. A plan to dump 200 tons of snow on a steep city street and open a temporary ski ramp has been postponed.

Mayor Gavin Newsom said city officials and event organizers -- including Olympic ski champ Jonny Moseley -- agreed on Wednesday that it wasn't the right time.

Icer, a company that makes waxes for skis and snowboards, planned to bring the snow and build a jump for 20 snowboarders and skiers who would compete for a $100,000 prize. MTV was scheduled to film the action.

Newsom said the jump still could go forward as early as two weeks from now, but that a delay of a month or two was more likely. He said organizers would meet with community members to develop a plan to deal with the expected crowd and make sure the jump would be safe.

The plan had prompted an outcry among residents worried they wouldn't be able to drive to and from their homes. A bride-to-be was even upset that the event could ruin her planned wedding at a neighborhood mansion.

Michela Alioto-Pier, who represents the Pacific Heights neighborhood where the jump was scheduled, said she was pleased with the decision.

"This is the only responsible thing to do," she said
