5. I just feel like this is the attitude often here --

and my personal belief system is pretty much in line with that of Elaine Pagels, who rejects almost all Christian doctrine. I'm interested, however, as she is, in exploring the big questions re. existence, and think some kind of spirituality, if it involves only a tree outside the window, can be valuable.

I rarely weigh in on these topics, and would prefer that a new forum be created for them, in the same way a forum was created for Israel/Palestine. I regret this divisive issue among DUers.

Although I'm a bit irked this got moved to the Lounge. Call me arrogant, but I think this thread is more thought-provoking than the other relgion threads which have appeared in GD today. And there's not even an ATA anymore to go to to whine about it. :cry:

In fairness to the mods, I should state that my gratitude towards the great job they do 24/7 greatly outweighs my minor annoyance with this one issue.

... the responses to your thread (purposefully) illustrate how unproductive the threads you refer to in GD are.

I generally don't post in those type of threads, but today I did in order to question the value that they serve. Most participants aren't there to consider the position of others ... they are often there to complain about people with different systems of belief or to claim superiority because of their system ... there is rarely any true dialog.

In general whatever a persons belief system is, it is what has brought them here and what motivates them to have progressive ideals (be it a belief in God(s) or a belief in the responsibility of humankind).

I'm guilty of sometimes participating in those things too, but typically it only takes about 15 posts before they turn into full-blown sanctimony contests.
