13. So do I add a little salt before rolling |
|
in cornmeal? I may try this. If I can find it fresh which you can't always around here. My mom used to make it boiled or added it to stews and I remember it as being very slimy.

15. That way (stewed) it is slimy. But you can buy it frozen |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 02:32 PM by Shell Beau
and it is good. You can also already buy it breaded in the corn meal(frozen), not quite as good as fresh, but still good. Salt and pepper with the cornmeal.

that since I am in the North. I never see frozen corn dogs around here either. But I will try it as you suggested. Thanks.

That is nuts. That is a good fast meal to feed kids (I don't have any, but still). If you can't find it frozen, then you'll have to do it the other way, which is easy and yummy!

5. Fried okra is some of the best stuff. |
|
And pickled okra too! If you eat it boiled or other ways, it is a little slimy.

My mom was so horrified by it as a kid in the 50's that I inherited her fear. :D
She served it a couple times just so that we'd agree with her :)

would eat it that way anyway. I'd say yuck too! You need it the right way and you may change your mind. Maybe not though. Those fears we have ingrained as a child tend to stick.

I can eat pretty much any fried foods. I dont like clams, but i like fried clams. I dont like oysters or calamari, but I like em fried!
So yeah maybe if its carbonized enough and full of hydrogenated fats and crunchy bits I'm sure its tasty :)
Same reason I asked Crazy Guggenheim for a Old Fashioned Glazed Donut on his donut thread. deep fried yum!

22. At the state fair here in Mississippi, |
|
they sell fried twinkies, snickers, oreo's, etc. Which leads me to believe that is why Mississippi is #1 in obesity. But I have a weak spot for fried foods too!

9. Indian style fried okra |
|
Slice fresh okra into half inch rounds.
Add several dried red peppers and some cumin seeds to a skillet over medium high with a tablespoon of oil. Toast the peppers and cumin seeds for a few seconds.
Add the okra and fry for quite a long time until dark and dry. You may have to turn heat down toward the end. Add some Garum Marsala to finish at the end.

My parents used to make me eat it fried (but thankfully not boiled), and I hated it. But a few years ago I had this salsa - it was made in the Southeastern USA, so playing up that angle it was called "Ya'llsa" (not sure about the spelling). This salsa actually had black eyed peas, corn and, yes, okra in it. And it was damned good stuff. I'm not sure I would hate okra now.
...'cept for the sliminess.

14. I had it cooked right once, and it was actually good! |
|
It was deep fried, and they deep fried in a way that it didn't slime and didn't trun to shit.
But, let's be honest - I ain't gonna trust anyone to ever cook it right again.
Goddamn, that is nasty shit. Slimy, disgustingly flavored shit.
There's probably ten people in the world who can cook it correctly every time they try.

31. Hey, hey, hey, don't dis the okra! |
|
In Oklahoma, okra is a summer way of life, but fried is the ONLY way to eat it. Cut it up in a bowl, add an egg and mix it up, salt and pepper, and then add corn meal (or Jiffy Cornbread mix--it's really good, too) to coat it and then fry it in vegetable oil. Drain it on a paper towel--nothing better!
Okra with fresh corn on the cob, home-grown tomatoes, and green beans and new potatoes and/or blackeyed peas and cornbread--the ultimate summer meal!!
