I don't feel like getting my wife a card for her birthday |
|
I got her tons of gifts (including an IRONING BOARD!!!!!!!!), and I'm not a big card fan anyway.
But she is. Plus I should get one from the kids too.
Bleh.
Why is everyone so into cards. I can understand if you're not gonna see the person and want to send a greeting! But come on! I'm right there showering you with gifts. Do you really think the card is going to say something you don't already know.
I'm sooooo tired.

I'll rather have a card then a gift. To me, it's more personal when someone takes the time to pick out that perfect card.

|
i spend a LOT of time picking out gifts for my relatives at Yuletide, more than most straight men should. i scour antique stores, weird asian gift shops, used record stores, etc.
when i get a card, it means nothing to me. although i act like it does if the occasion calls for it. i'm not a monster.

But I don't get the perfect gift all that often. Quite frankly, gifts don't really do that for me. I would say that 90% of the time, I have not gotten the perfect gift so the card means much more.

Maybe you could go out, pick a wildflower, press it in a book, then glue it to a piece of paper. My husband did this, and I can use it as a bookmark. Fairly easy to do and inexpensive (unless you live where there are no wildflowers!)

Let her see that you see her as more than a practical mate. Give her a lovey-dovey type card. Oh, I saw you also had to get a card for the kids to sign. Don't forget to get a card for the cat or the dog to give to her, too.

And cards are such a rip off, like $3 for a picture or cartoon and some sappy poetry. Although, there was one thrift shop that was selling them for a dime. I got some Valentine cards that way and sent one to my unmarried aunt. She seemed pretty excited about it, but it is more fun when it is not an every occasion occurence. I still think kids can make their own cards, but I am not sure how well my home-made cards have gone over.

|
Besides, they're not really personal - personal would be writing your own note not buying a pre-packaged, generic, Hallmark card (and I object to making those holiday-inventing greedy bastards richer anyway).
However, if the wife likes cards, you need to get off your lazy duff and go get one! It's one day out of the year, for Pete's sake!
And you need to do something to make up for the ironing board.

Driftwood, newspaper, pieces of broken pots, paper clips or shaving cream to spell romantic things out with, a candy bar, some colored string, then dust a little flour on top of it all and leave it under her pillow. Then she'll go to bed thinking you're a selfish rat and find your homemade card under her pillow and you'll of got it made.

out of driftwood, wire, springs, poles, etc. It shouldn't be too hard. It's basically a flat piece of wood or tin or something, with sliding legs and a notched thing under there, then cover it with a couple old sweat shirts. Homemade is always better than store bought, and sturdier. It should last for years. Every time she irons something she'll smile and feel extra feelings for you.

the tyrany of cards will never end until revolutionaries such as yourself stand up and say "I'm not going to partake in this pointless card buying ritual anymore." Why should you have to spend your hard earned money on a marked up piece of paper. you can get a whole pack of paper for the price of one card! Don't give in to the man, stand up and fight!

68. Some cards are better than others |
|
Card hierarchy:
Made yourself
Handmade cards by other people from gift stores
Other cards from gift stores/art stores/ bookstores
Cards from groceries/drug stores
Cards from Walmart/discount stores
-----
I don't go for "humorous" cards myself. But that is all my parents buy for themselves.
What does your wife like? (not necessarily the same thing YOU like)

on the ironing board. That's as good as a Hallmark in my book!
And with luck the doctors will be able to remove the ironing board from your colon before the weekend's over!

Sometimes I feel it is a waste of paper, but if it means a lot to your wife, you should bite the bullet and get her a really sweet one. I'll leave you alone about the ironing board. It seems you've already heard enough about it! ;)
