The most ridiculously overpriced beer ever? |
|
I'm just starting this thread to ask the question... what's the most outrageously overpriced beer you have ever come across? Down in the UK forum one of the main topics seems to be the cost of Hoegaarden at Clarence Yard in Southend, which at £4.80 a pint is extortionate. However, I can remember a night out at the Cafe De Paris in London where the price of a drink was £7.00! :grr: You can work out how many dollars that is for yourselves....far too much. Mind you just about all the bars in London are far too expensive anyway. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=191x23http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=191x9012#9059

The Coors brewing company should be paying people to drink their beer, not the other way around.

LOL! I did think of mentioning that option... |
|
...crap beer that you have to be paid yourself in order to drink it. For me my local brewery (Ridley's) fits right into that catagory, not to mention the likes of Fosters and American Budweiser.

it tastes like beer, almost, and aftertastes like burnt rubber, kangaroo urine, and palmolive. And the aftertaste lasts for HOURS longer than the beer.

Although at least that's a good pint- round the corner the Sun Rooms they charge £4 for a pint of this raspberry stuff and it's really, really unpleasant.
I generally accept that drinking in London is gonna be a rip-off, but £7?! That's extortion by any standards.
On edit: according to the old adverts, a pint of Tennants costs £15 a pint in Reykjavik....

...is a well known West End "celebrity" haunt. I think it gets used for a lot of movie premier parties and so on. To that end I think they like to go for ahem, "exclusive" bar prices.
My excuse is that it was a works do. I personally didn't like the place all that much. Mind you, given how much of a rip-off most pubs and clubs are in London I think I'd probably go teetotal if I ever went to live down in t'smoke! I mean goodness, it's difficult enough just finding a half decent pint of bitter in London.

it is packaged in smaller quanities and has a much higher alchol content than other beers. it also meant as a afterdinner drink to be sipped.

8. Samuel Adams Utopias 2005 edition costs $100 per bottle |
|
Its not really a beer. At 25% alcohol and the wheat fermenting process gives it a port consistency and a rather a sweet beer flavor as the natural sugars really come out. It is meant to be sipped like a port in small 2oz servings.

9. The most expensive was the UK's King Tut beer |
|
Tutankhamen Ale was a British-made beer purportedly made from a 3,000 year old recipe of Egyptian beer makers. 1,000 bottles of the beer were sold at Harrods department store in London (a few were sold at auction around the world to benefit Egyptian museum collections). The first bottle sold in England for over $7,000 and the rest sold for about $100 per bottle.

I was in a bar here in St. Louis last week and saw that they had the original Czech Budvar.
Since the local brewing behemoth has been in court for 20 years with the makers of Budvar I thought I'd give it a try.
It's really a very tasty, authentic, Pillsner. In fact, I thought it was as good or better than my favorite Czech Pillsner, Golden Pheasant.
However, when the check came I almost coughed up a lung. $8.00 per bottle.

Have you had the opportunity to taste the Golden Pheasant?
It's a remarkable beer. Very crisp and tasty, plus it comes in big 16oz bottles.
It's a revelation to drink authentic Pillsner. It's a real "aha" moment for an American. You realize that this is what American beer is supposed to taste like if it weren't for the Busch's and Coor's of the world cutting corners on time and ingredients in an attempt to wring every last penny of profit out of a barrel of beer.

But I think i may have seen it for sale at one of the local pubs, I'll have to try it now. People like Busch and Coors just take all the artistry out of brewing to dole out the alcoholic equivalent of McDonalds- although a distressingly large number of people here in Britain seem to favour Carling lager, compared to which even Bud seems palatable.

When I was a young boy Carling Black Label was a sponsor for the Baltimore Oriole's radio broadcasts. I still remember their radio jingle, "Mabel, Mabel, Carling Black Label Beer".
Later on, I had an opportuinity to taste Black Label before it, thankfully, faded into oblivion. Truly nasty beer.
"Mabel the Waitress - During the 1950s Carling Black Label featured an attractive blond beer toting waitress named Mabel in a series of animated Carling Black Label beer commercials. When a customer wanted a beer they cried "Hey, Mabel!, Black Label!" Mabel the bartendress rarely spoke in the commercials but at the end of each spot she gave the TV viewers a friendly wink. The campaign was created by Lang, Fisher, & Stashower in the 1940s. Their ad jingle was written by Phil Davis. Actress Jean Goodspeed, a New York actress and model portrayed Mabel beginning in 1951. However, in the mid-1950s, Goodspeed ended her career to become a mother and Carling Black Label folks decided to animate the Mabel character but also thought it wise to insert images of the original Mabel (Goodspeed) for good measure. The ads ran successfully for twenty years. Finally, in 1970, a new actress was cast in the role, but soon after, the Mabel character faded into advertising history. Note: The Carling Black Label slogan in the 1940s was "Pass Up 'Ladies Beer'....Be A Man About It, Drink Stag!" The "Mabel, Black Label" slogan was coined in 1951"

22. A draft Budweiser @ The Bull & Finch in Boston (now Cheers) |
|
I can't remember exactly how much it was, and they don't have the price listed online, but it was ridiculous. It was at least seven dollars, maybe as high as nine bucks. It was enough for me to balk at consuming a beer in B&F, which was something I had wanted to do for years before coming to Boston. I got a Diet Coke instead, which was expensive too. It was 11 in the morning and I wasn't in the mood for a beer anyway.
I was pissed, but not pissed enough to balk at dropping a wad of cash in the gift shop. I love Cheers!

The most expensive would be, when I went to Mezzo in London one time and they charged £6 for a bottle of Corona. I'm NOT even that fond of Corona and this certainly taught me the lesson of NOT to drift away from my beloved Stella.

Damn i mean really $4-5 for a 8-10 Oz of crap commercial beer. I don't care much for commercial beer, i infact avoid it like the plague. I do however enjoy a wonderfull honey nut ale offered by my local micro brewer. It cost $5 a bottle direct, but it is worth the money.
