2. Trust me on this one..I'm a musician for a living...Its played all over |
|
All the same hits are requested and played no matter where you go..At this point I know every one of them too....:(..Except I have never bothered to learn American Pie...It's the only hold out of the Hit squad that includes, Free Bird, Seger( Turn the Page. Old Time R and R), Sweet home Alabama and Brown eyed Girl....no matter where I am these tunes are always near the to top of the request list........There are many more too and I've put a price tag on them if requested.:)

It is universally loved. I heard it on both AOR and classic rock stations in Seattle, and here in the southwest. Nationwide, it ranks either #1 or #2 with 'Stairway To Heaven' as the most popular song in classic rock history.
I love the story behind the song. Originally written as a tribute to Duane Allman in 1970 (a year before he died, not because he died), the signature line "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" was a paraphrase of what Allen Collin's wife would say to him jokingly (and lovingly) whenever he hit the road with the band in their early days. Allen Collins wrote the music, and Ronnie Van Zant took her words and put them into song. It is a song about longing and the difficulty of leaving loved ones on the road - not nearly as maudlin or morbid as even its many fans suggest. Musically, that extended coda was a nod to Jeff Beck's "Bolero". Skynyrd's biggest immediate influence were all the British invasion bands - the Stones, Cream, Beatles, etc.
As an alternative to Al Kooper's lushly produced version you hear on the radio (that is him on organ, the same guy you hear on Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" and many other classics), check out the lean, bluesy demo from 1970 on the boxed set. It is a COMPLETELY different, and much better song. The live version from "One More From The Road" is also superior to the studio version.

10. I was playing golf once |
|
and heard a band practicing in a garage just off the fairway. When they took a break I screamed "Freebirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd" and within seconds
"If I stay here........" one of the real highlights of my golf career.
