.... but there is a reason that truckers don't turn off their engines. Turning off a hot engine (so that it cools quickly) risks damaging it. After hours of highway driving, the engine must be idled for a while before you shut it off.

I see that there aren't many long-haul truckers here :)

Maybe he was driving and got a call he needed to take. I know lots of people complain about people driving while their talking on the phone, saying it's not safe. In New Jersey you have to pull over, you're not allowed to talk on the phone while you're driving.

And he did pull over into a public place's parking lot, not in a residential area.

And also it takes more gas to start up a diesel engine then to let it idle most of the time.
