According to The National Enquirer , Bea Arthur stormed out of Pamela Anderson’s Friar’s Club roast for what reason?

A. She and Rip Taylor arrived wearing the exact same wig.
B. Sid Caesar asked if she’d like to "see where the horse bit him."
C. Jeffrey Ross made a crack implying that she has a penis.
D. While Bea grazed at the buffet, Andy Dick slipped a live opossum down her dress.
E. She and Pamela Anderson arrived wearing the exact same breasts.

1. She was an odd fit among all those no-name "talents"
Restrained yet still rattled off the filthy lines of Anderson's "novel". She was much too classy to be in that blue-fest.

11. And is that why you used a photo with a caption like that?
To honor her?

I love it when people tell me what my intentions are.

Photo's gone.

The world is safe again.

Consider putting me on "ignore."

I can still be offended by the sexist nature of the picture can I not?

Oh... and thanks for removing it...

8. Friars Club Roasts are known for being raw and tasteless...
...and often the "humor," I think, is meant to inflict at least a little bit of pain.

However, the real barbs are usually directed toward the "roastee," so I dunno...

15. Well, to be fair, everyone got it pretty bad.
She was, by no means, the only one getting put down. But I felt so sorry for her. Poor Bea! I guess you ask for it in a way by going to those things, especially one for Pam Anderson.

4. i actually saw that
and even the whole show was laden with obscenities and vulgarities, i thought ross went over the line with that.

that's not cool to joke about with a lady of her age, imo.

but perhaps i'm just a prude.

9. It's a recurring theme...
For some reason, she shows up to ALL those roasts, and they always make jokes about her having dude parts... if she expected something different this time, she's deluded.

The roast did have its moments...

20. ah ok
that was the first and only one i ever saw so i didn't know...

but if they've done that before, not sure why she'd be so offended this time around then.

i have to admit, i felt sorry for her when he made that joke...

12. That's Radar's caption...
...it's the photo that went with the article, and there was no way to just post the photo.

Given the editorial slant of Radar, I see it more as a poke at the insensitivity that spawned the remarks in the first place, rather than an endorsement of them or their own attack on Bea.

Of course, I'm not the person who put the caption there, so I can't say what their intention was.

But I totally understand what you mean. It is tasteless. Not necessarily on the OP's part, but still tasteless.

22. Good for her.
I'm pissed that the first woman roasted was Pam. Nothing against Pam, but I'd hoped Comedy Central would have roasted someone else for their first roast of a woman--Janeane, Sarah Silverman, Ellen, Margaret Cho...

But no. Oh well.

viewers and that is all they care about. But she really didn't deserve a roast IMO!

23. I doubt this is true
Friar's Club roasts are a long running NY tradition. Phyllis Diller once said “When The Friars Club roasts you, you’ve arrived.” They have lost exclusivity since they became revenue producing items for the group (good comics don't make good TV ratings but Andy Dick molesting Pam Anderson's breasts on TV scores big).

The funny thing about these roasts is that the roastee is usually the subject of less jokes than the guests. The guests seated on the stage with the roastee are often the subject of dozens of barbs. Bea is a friar and has been since a few years after Liza became the first female Friar. Bea knows what goes on here. Jokes about Bea's masculinity are hardly a first, and are definitely not a first at Friar roasts. She has been picked apart at roasts in the past. I personally find it hard to believe Bea Arthur stormed out after this type of joke. I usually don't trust the National Enquirer as a source and don't in this case. If Bea left, I don't believe it had anything to do with Jeffrey Ross's wise crack.

24. It wasn't Friars club. It was a Comedy Central produced roast
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 03:03 PM by jane_pippin
hosted by one of the old Man Show guys.

You're right about the status of Friars Club roasts, but this was not that.

Having said that, I don't know if it's true--I had no interest in watching it. It may well not be. But given what I saw in the promos I wouldn't be surprised if she did.

on edit: the article is from the Enquirer so I take it with a grain of salt anyway.

29. I thought it was a Friars roast
I did not know it was a comedy central production. Still, Bea is an old school comic. She has given it pretty good over the years at these types of roasts. I'm sure she was okay with it. She is nto the type to get pissed because someone calls her old looking or a man. She has heard it all before and dished it worse than these kids today can imagine. I love Bea and have way more faith in her than that. Granted this is all my opinion. I just don't buy that she was pissed about this.

She has been recognized for her work in television with two Emmys, for Maude and Golden Girls, and has five times been nominated for an American Comedy Award's "Lifetime Achievement Award."

So, nah, to those who say she's no good. :P

Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 03:18 PM by Neo
The skank level was so extreme they'll need a hazmat crew to fumigate the auditorium for a week. Bea Arthur was one of a few there who wasn't swimming with STDs.

and furthermore people, look at the "news" souce
IT'S THE FUCKING NATIONAL ENQUIRER PEOPLE!
I highly doubt she stormed out.

30. The original joke was from a few roasts back
I can't remember who is was for but Sandra Bernhardt (sp?) was there and Ross (hilarious) gets up to roast the roasters and says, "Geezsh what's up with that Sandra Bernhardt... I wouldn't ____ her with Bea Arthur's d**k"

I thought someone else used that line this time.
