"I think that children are overly sexed in our society. It's disgusting."
As said by a friend of mine over e-mail.

She also wrote this:

Fellow Americans, please help me in a boycott.

I have noticed in the past years that it has become acceptable for young girls, some no older than seven, to wear shirts that say 'Sexy' and 'Hot Mama' on them. Also, pants with 'Bootylicious', 'Spank me', and 'Naughty Girl' are being sold nation wide.

String bikinis are being sold for young girls, as well as thong underwear. It is actually very hard to find one-peice bathing suits for children anymore.

What is it with our nation? Must our little girls become hoochie mamas at age 12, now? I think that it is disgusting that girls are being forced into this.

I mean, back in the day, we had Barbie. Sure, she was a stereotype, but at least she had GOALS. Astronaut, doctor, author. Today, girls play with Bratz Dolls, which, as far as I've seen, pretty much only want to be Rockstars and Housewives.

I remember when the sexiest thing I could wear was a cheerleading costume for Halloween. Now, we have pimp 'n' ho costumes, and 'popstar' costumes. The 'popstar' costume is complete with low-rise pants and belly-baring shirt. If it the kid had cleavage, they'd show that off, too.

Please, join me in a boycott. Do not buy clothes that are overly sexual for your children, no matter how cheap. When you see someone else wearing that shirt, especially if it is a young girl, point out to your daughter/son that not all people are like that.

Thank you.

And, on a final note, I think that the Simpson's said it best.

Store Worker: Here, why don't you try on this? It's part of our 'Little Hooker' line.

Lisa: But I'm only eight years old!

Store Worker: So is your look! All the popular girls are doing it!

2. She's 100% right
Girls are being told that they are valued if they're hot and sexy. They should be learning that they are valued for having integrity, smarts, and other qualities.

I know girls that young can't be buying it on their own.

11. That's exactly right
It sends shivers down my spine that there are clearly many parents who feel that buying thongs for their little girls is appropriate. I cannot believe there is a market for little girls to be sexualized like this. Sad, sad, sad.

4. This is an indictment of the Family Values crowd.
You keep hearing the message over and over that its so important to breed and have children, and its to the point where part of the indoctrination involves getting girls ready to be women at an earlier age than they ever should be.

Plenty of blame for everyone for enabling the Paris Hilton wannabe trend. Little girls shouldn't wear it. Parents shouldn't buy it. Stores shouldn't sell it.

I don't think censorship is the answer, god damned if little kids should be wearing thongs.

6. I don't know if I'd call that a boycott as much as a clothing choice
If you don't like it and don't want your children in it, don't buy it for them or allow them to wear it. I do the same thing with meat and my kids, though without the judging other people part.

A boycott is a little different, but whatever.

7. Comical - Dr. Dobson's book, which I picked up for 20 cents at a
second-hand store, agrees with Freud that children are sexual at a very early age.

Trouble is, that was published in 1979. Wonder how it would have flown after the "post-daycare center sex scandal" of the 80s?

9. It bothers me immensely....
Now, I am an outspoken advocate for sexual freedom. But that sort of thing really bothers me. With sexual freedom also comes sexual responsibility....

And one of those responsibilities is not turning our children into sex objects.

(Anyone notice it's usually little girls? "Let's convince them to only value themselves in as much as men desire them. And let's start it really early so she never questions it, in fact she aspires to it. What price kindness, compassion, intelligence, talent when all that matters is what an easy lay she is? And wants to be, if we sell it right.")

Don't even get me started on this topic....

Little Joan Benette- Ramsey (?) is still with us, only now she's looking sluttier than ever.

Disgusting.

John Lennon said it best-

"Woman is the nigger of the world
We make her paint her face and dance"

12. This is just the worst: Bratz Babyz...
An infant with lipstick, eyeliner, belly shirt, and a bottle on a chain. It's so rediculous that it makes me laugh, and then I just think "WTF?" I usually don't get bugged by dolls, but... This is just beyond the pale.

14. Yikes! That's pretty scary! The thing I
liked, at least initially about Bratz, was the fact that the dolls were multi-cultural. Something that many doll makers STILL aren't addressing. :grr:

Now if they could make the dolls multicultural without the hootchie-hooker wear, I might buy one.

13. It is horrible
School clothes shopping is a nightmare! My daughter is an akward size. She is 8 but the tallest in her class. I have to go to "Misses" department to get her pants! Well, it did make it a little easier though, found what size she was and got the capri pants (which fit her like jeans would) and xs-s tee shirts with flowers or solid colors with no words. My father took her out after that and got her some skirts (in the "Misses") and they go past the knees! YEA!!! I figure do not go into the kids section anymore. No more skirts that show the bum when bending over, no more slutty shirts. Just clothes that will not make her look like she a street walker at 8.

GEP

15. I am particularly disturbed by the pants with
suggestive comments written across the seat. As stated in the original post "bootylicious" for example. Those make me crazy.

When I was a teen, there was a huge uproar over Madonna and her style of dress. Clothing manufacturers started making outfits patterned after her thrift store style of dressing, complete with the 'boy toy' belts.

While I still recall the controversy surrounding all of that at the time, that was nothing compared to this. Only a few manufacturers designed outfits matching Madonna's style of dress. Now an entire industry is doing this.

There are NO alternatives of other clothing items for children.Everyone seems to be making and marketing the same stuff. That's scary and sad...

Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 02:12 AM by regnaD kciN
A girl, maybe 9 years old, wearing a t-shirt with a drawing of two cherries and the text "RIPE CHERRY!" on it.

She was at a Home Depot. With her (straight-laced looking) father.

Which brings me to the basic question. People are calling for parents to boycott this sort of clothing. Why is an organized boycott necessary? Why would any parent be willing to buy this sort of thing for their child (and thereby send the message that this is the acceptable standard for them) in the first place, boycott or no boycott?
