Folks, I am having a lot of trouble regulating my diabetes. |
|
I just checked and my glood glucose is 278...sigh. I've been trying. No wonder I've slept for the past two days.
I could use a hug.

 I'm so sorry you're having a hard time with regulating your blood sugar. Are you under a lot of stress? Perhaps the lack of sleep is contributing to these high readings...? Have you attended diabetes classes?
Please, be well, m'dear! :pals:

My dear, I am sorry and pained that you suffer with this affliction. As a spontaneous kinda person, I dread most of all a chronic illness that would require me to regulate everything.
One bright note: numerically you have more friends on DU than ever your highest glucose reading.

Or if its as hot as it is here swim laps or do treadmill or whatever you like at the YMCA.
This almost always works for me.
Are you on any meds?

|
We don't have a YMCA. It costs $$$ to get into a pool, unfortunately. It's pretty late to be taking a walk on the dark street. Tomorrow I'll try to take a trip up to the lake and get some exercise.
I took a pill to lower my blood glucose.
Thanks.

10. I'll be your partner in the struggle. |

I've got it too my dear. Type I. Diagnosed well into my 20's. I've had it for about 4 years now. It never gets any easier. I go through periods of good regulation and then periods of bad regulation. Regardless of how well I monitor and count carbs.
The thing is, when my blood glucose gets up that high, I can immediately correct it with insulin. If you're type II (I don't know that you are, your post just seems to indicate it) then it isn't that easy. I feel for you.
Here's a hug from me. The disease is a bitch. But like I always say to myself..... it could be a whole lot worse. GOod vibes.

I have Type 2. I took a pill to lower my blood glucose. We'll see how it goes.

16. Have you considered an insulin pump? |
|
I think that such are available. You get it pumped continuously and it is supposed to prevent the extremes.
Good luck. Try some crackers.

I haven't been doing very well at regulating lately, so I may have to end up on insulin. I will just have to try harder.

35. Are you doing anything with your diet to try to control it? |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 11:57 PM by Eloriel
Edit: Nevermind. I read the post downthread re hwo difficult to control and "too much carb." I will say, tho, that there's an M.D. who's written a book called The Rosedale Diet -- his name is Rosedale -- and he calls himself a metabolic expert and claims his diet can cure diabetes. It's not too different from South Beach, which I'm following as a prediabetic. (Aargh, what an awful thing to say: prediabetic. Yikes!)
I'm so sorry for your problems. Health problems are no picnic. Megahugs --

17. Diabetes is a nasty, nasty disease. |
|
My brother has it and I've seen the damage it can do. I can't offer anything beyond what the others have suggested. I'm sure you know all the things you need to do to keep it under control, but sometimes it just refuses to be controlled.

18. And sometimes we just forget to take our medicine. |
|
I think that's what happened today. I hope it's under better control tomorrow. I have really focused on managing and haven't been doing too well for the past week or so.
Sorry about your brother. Managing diabetes is not easy. Just when I think I have it under control, something happens.

26. On one hand it's easy |
|
for me to think, How can you possibly forget to take your medication. But on the other, I'm not the one who has to remember what may well be a complicated regimen of pills and perhaps injections. What's really distressing is that forgetting one round of medications can cause havoc with this disease.
Is there any hope out there for a real cure? I understand type I can be cured with a pancreas transplant, but that's not often done. Type II doesn't seem to have any real cure so far as I can tell, and that's the one most people have, including my brother.

27. Yeah, I have Type 2, also. But I have a virtual pharmacopeia of pills |
|
for other issues. I've filled about ten prescriptions this month for various chronic issues. Also, I was given another medication for my diabetes and moved my diabetic equipment away from the other stuff. That's probably why I forgot it. It was just one day, but I'm suffering the effects even now. My blood glucose is normal today, but I sometimes have gastro-intestinal difficulties after a hard day of riding the glucose roller coaster. Believe me, I didn't intend to forget my medication and I've been sticking myself up to six times a day trying to regulate this damn disease. In fact, I've decided to devote my life to beating back the diabetes first. It's been getting out of hand for the past week and I don't understand why. I'm not even sure I forgot my meds...
I rarely forget my meds, but with chronic pain and fuzzy-headedness from riding the glucose roller coaster, it can occasionally happen.

29. Let me see if I can explain how hard it is to regulate this disease. |
|
Blood glucose is an accumulative thing. If I left off too high or too low yesterday, it's going to affect me today. So, if I take my pills and exercise, sometimes the blood glucose goes lower and lower and lower over the course of several days until it's too low. Then I have to cut back on the pills, maybe take a half instead of a whole. Then maybe the blood glucose will creep higher and higher and higher. Then maybe stupid Ladyhawk forgets a pill or eats just a bit too much carbohydrate, or maybe my hormones start affecting my blood sugar and suddenly I'm way too high again. This morning on an empty stomach my blood glucose was 185--much, much too high. I medicated it and my blood glucose dropped to normal.
I'll check it again right now...169, which isn't too bad after eating. It may slide up again, which I'll have to watch for.
I've also noticed that if I don't drink enough water, I can have problems.
That's what's been happening to me. I've been monitoring like crazy, trying to find a regimen that works all the time.

31. Because of my brother |
|
I have some clue about how difficult this disease is to control. And actually, his medication seems to work very consistently for him. But even so, it's a roller-coaster because your body isn't doing what it should do on its own.
What's so insidious, I think, is that so much of diabetes is invisible. It's possible to ignore the symptoms for years (as my brother did) and wind up with irreversible damage. I suppose we should all be grateful that there are reasonably effective medicines out there. But nothing changes the difficulty of dealing with it.

I'm a diabetic also and am just getting a handle on it. I do take a once a day injection of insulin. I'm currently trying to improve on diet and exercise.
I wish I had an answer for you. Try your best, it can catch up with you and cause problems.

It's pretty important. I hope I'm not saying anything you don't know. Here's a good website on the subject: http://www.diabetes.ca/Section_About/glycemic.aspOh, and don't forget to take your medicine.
