anyone living in new orleans
Please consider getting inland tomorrow... there is a decent chance of a direct hit of a severe (category 4-5) hurricane on Monday.

Being below sea level... you will drown.

Not saying there will certainly be a direct hit... but it is certainly looking that way right now... and the #1 disaster scenario in hurricane forecasting is a severe hurricane making a direct hit on New Orleans, being below sea level.
Stay tuned tomorrow... and if possible get ready to go to higher ground and out of the path of this storm.

More later...

1. I called my mom tonight..
and pleaded with her to flee with Dad & Maw-Maw. They'll be leaving tommorrow night, thank god.

I know, I know.. the forecasters keep on saying that it'll turn and hit MS/AL.. but that's what they said about it hitting Florida. I'm not taking them at their word that it'll turn in time to spare New Orleans.. nope..

2. well... here's the deal...
it depends on when kat interacts with the trough... as a compressed trough, there is a good chance of a wicked turn Northeast from going northwest once the cane is on the other side of the trough. If it hasn't reached NO yet, NO is safe. If it has, there's a solid shot of new orleans becoming the next atlantis.

many ppl in new orleans have no car

may be able to pick up one or two but don't want to promise anything as i'm on a wait and see plan and if you wait too late the roads don't move anyway

he can pm tho if he has no better alternative

i'm just playing it pretty close to the edge so don't wanna promise anything

20. I'm not sure. I'm going to pmail him again.
When is your hubby due in? Head back towards MS - don't try to north or west routes, they will be congested. You can head to MS and take 67 north into into the eastern part of the state.

Be careful.

11. Please do evacuate now if you are in the path.
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 11:54 PM by Akoto
This is not the sort of storm you want to get caught in, no matter how sturdy you think your house may be. Gather your important documents (esp. your insurance papers, if you have them) and hit the road tomorrow. If you wait til the last minute, you may get stuck in traffic from others who've also delayed their retreat.

15. but there is no evac order ?
we're supposed to let the low lying parishes & places evac first

otherwise it blocks off routes for people who have even less chance?

16. My advice stands.
We did not have an evacuation order where I was last year. We waited, and as a result, did not have time to retreat when the storm came in upon us. Our house was destroyed as we ran to a neighbor's at 2am.

Having experienced that, I heartily advise evacuation while the roads are still relatively clear. :)

19. Not trying to scare you. :)
I know it's really scary to just leave your home behind, but your life is more important than stuff. I just want to make sure that you are safe. These storms are incredibly dangerous even at low categories.

21. this is the ONLY hurricane I have EVER seen that I would evacuate from
(that said... I only started following this stuff in the late nineties... I'm sure I would have fled Andrew.)

If Fema does not play this perfectly, hundreds will die... possibly thousands. (if it is a new orleans landfall.)

23. That is true. Better to leave now or in the morning before it's too late.
Too many people to start evacuating at the last minutes. The freeways would be jam packed.

39. they have no choice
nagin just pointed out that many tourists were already in town & now have no way out if they came by air, the planes out are fully booked

no more rental cars

he is asking them to shelter in hotel rooms 3rd floor or above when storm approaches

no harm in them getting their party on tonight

i've always been a little troubled at the promotion of n'awlins as a tourist destination in aug. but you know most times it is a good deal for tourists in the off-season

and she's hightailing it outa town in the morning with her main man, a veritable zoo of animals, and, hopefully, some friends to head up here to SW Ark. They best not party too hard tonight ;) But I think it'll be in good time, even with slow traffic. That storm looks like the mother of all storms, though.

Be safe south Louisiana DU-ers!!! O8) :grouphug:
