My only friend in FL dropped me

A sidenote: My one friend here no longer wants to talk to me. He says "I am from a different world" and that "it was nice knowing you". He is black and has been avoiding me since I've been attacked.

And this is after I drove him around and did things for him. I took him places that he will never see. I feel betrayed here.

I've learned, however, that when "good" friends disappear, generally I discover later that I dodged a bullet because I wouldn't have opted to be in their company had I known all the facts leading up to their departure.

I don't know the facts about what happened to you and your friend, and without further information, I wouldn't go beyond the generalization that I've given.

i live in Orlando, and there's plenty to do downtown on the weekends. I don't know where you are in florida, but there are always more likeminded individuals out there than at first it seems. Don't give up, use this time to reconstruct yourself, and be social!

Not a good idea in Miami. Twice I had a car stolen from a downtown Miami parking lot. Also, not too safe a place. You *really* don't need your car stolen or vandalized after everything else that has happened.

Better yet, check to see if the public library has groups that meet there. Perhaps you can find a group that shares your interests (Carlos).

but I think you're making HUGE leaps in logic here. Why did you feel it necessary to point out that this friend is black? What was his shady past? How do you go from these thoughts to "he could be involved"?

Perhaps you are right in your suspicions, but maybe you could provide more information about this person and your doubts. Otherwise, it does seem as if you're making an assessment based on his race.

What places did you take him "that he will never see"?

I'm sure you realize that hard times prove who your real friends are. When you need so much, even a long-standing friend is prone to not be there to the extent you want them to be. If it's a new friendship, that's even more the case. Perhaps you just need more support than he is willing or able to give right now.

I'm still not getting it here. What does race have to do with going to upscale places? I know a lot of white people who haven't been to those types of places. Are you saying blacks don't go to those places? Isn't it an issue of socioeconomic class rather than race?

I have had perfectly well-meaning white people tell me I'm "not like those other blacks" like it's a compliment. Or my favorite, "you speak so well". It's irritating and I call people on it, but try to do so in an understanding manner, cause I know it's just because they don't know any better. (Incidentally the website http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com gleefully skewers this kind of behavior and is really funny).

I disagree with Carlos a lot on DU but I sincerely hope his situation gets better. He's had a rough couple of weeks.
