*RANT* - Sometimes I hate people! |
|
Paul and I went to the Shelter this past weekend. We were driving along when I spotted a deer standing along the road eating happily. I took a couple of pictures and we watched until the deer went back into the woods.
A bit later I saw about a dozen turkey birds along the side of the road. I didn't take their picture but I enjoyed watching them for a few moments.
Then as we drove further down the road I saw it...a kitten, smashed in the middle of the road. I cringed and pulled over. It was almost a phyiscal hurt. Paul asked me what was wrong and I told him that sometimes I hate people. After seeing this I realized that people who don't care for their pets or fur-kids or whatever you want to call them should suffer the same fate as the pet does.
Pet gets killed in the road? Lay down.
WHY do people have to let animals run free? Then they complain when the animal becomes pregnant (gee, never thought about getting her fixed now, did you?) or gets killed or whatever.
Dogs and cats are NOT meant to be outdoors alone! Dogs and cats should be FIXED because there are too many unwanted and unloved animals in the world without adding more.
Support or volunteer at your local shelter. It'll do you (and many animals) a world of good to know that people still care about them.
Alright. End of rant. I know it's a jumbled mess but I'm just so frustrated by things like this.

2. I saw a dead kitty in the street last week |

It is really sad when you see pets get hit by cars. People should be more careful if they're going to own animals.
But to be fair, sometimes pets just escape. My ex used to have a dog that could jump over a six-foot fence, and would at any opportunity she got.

But I think cats should be outdoor and indoor. I think it is cruel to keep them inside all the time; and even worse to declaw them. I let mine out in the hood to climb trees and run around. Some cats don't get it; but most figure out real quick not to go near the road. I agree that a kitten should not go outside alone, 'cause they are just babies. Maybe it is because until recently I have never met anyone who didn't let their cats out--living in the country most of my life.
I agree that pets should be fixed, though.

10. I agree, indoors and out |

They have a social life as well if there are other cats around. If we catch our cats across the street, they run back like they are in trouble, but all are neutered and tend to stay close by (easy enough as we have a very large yard). Neutering should be a given for any pet dog or cat, however.

Cats run free, and sometimes they get run down by a car. It happens, it is sad, and there is not much you can do about it.
Indoor cats the answer ? Bullshit. I can think of no other torture worse than condemning a cat to inside a house. That is far more cruel than the risk of a cat gettig hit by a car.
Be angry who abuse their animals. A dead kiten on the side of the road is not abuse.

are indoor cats and they're happy as can be. Where I live I couldn't consider letting them go outside because they'd end up as coyote food.

try to escape when you open the door?
My two like to sit on the windowsill in the living room and look out but they don't try to go outside when I leave the door open.
They've got the dog and each other to stalk and attack. They've got the run of the house and can find all sorts of places to curl up in. I have a small pot of live kitty grass they can chew on.
They certainly don't act as if they're prisoners or are deprived. :)

Mine do exactly the same thing. They have a window friend(a non-prisoner cat)who visits at night and drives them crazy, but they never try to escape. I rescued them when they were abandoned kittens, and they are just over a year old now. I guess they've never known "freedom",so they don't know the difference. They seem happy and comfortable, and are quite pampered and spoiled.:)

One of my cats actually ran into my house as a 6 week old kitten, and wouldn't leave. There are 4 cats in my house (its a big house) and only one of them ever tries to get outside...but only when its spring and then she stays on the porch. I think it would be cruel to take a feral cat and force him or her to be an indoor cat, but cats with the right temperment don't seem to have any trouble with it.
Also, we only keep our cats indoors because of a pet thief who took one of our cats six years ago, along with several other animals in the neighbrohood. Animals disappear all the time. (And some people can do sadistic things to animals).

Brat was a feral kitten. My (now ex) Mother-In-Law feeds 20-30 feral cats and Brat was one of the kittens born to the ferals. The only reason all of my M-I-L's cats don't end up as coyote food is because her dog keeps the coyotes chased away. However, some of her feral cats do eventually end up missing and presumed eaten.
Brat came to live with me when she was about 8 weeks old. She was one of the kittens my M-I-L had managed to make friends with and Brat would actually let my M-I-L pet her occasionally. At the time we were living in Houston and I suppose Brat was so traumatized by the drive from Oklahoma to Texas that she didn't freak out when she arrived at my house. She's the most loving of the two cats now.

And none of them are outdoor cats. (Well, Star might have been, she came from the shelter.)
Outdoor cats don't live as long as indoor cats. Cats do not need to be outside. They can live happily and much longer indoors.
As for being out in the country, one of the volunteers of the shelter we're working with said that she would never let her cats out in the city but she does in the country. To which Clare, the other volunteer, told her about Pine Martens and birds of prey.
If one of my cats ever got outside she wouldn't know what to do.

take rides with them til they discovered the 'stowaway' . He used to also walk around the neighborhood with me to protect me from the big dogs. He also visited me as a ghost (NO BS) But nowadays we keep our cats indoors because there are so many idiots out there.

when it comes to abusing and neglecting animals. Someone dumped 2 small kittens on the street in front of my house this past weekend. Well, even though I am not a cat person, I rescued them. And since I have a Rottweiler that wanted to make a snack out of them, I have to find them a home fast. I am on Yahoo animal rescue group lists, so I posted to the local rescues. They were adopted yesterday. Boy, what a relief! They were taken to the vet and the poor little things had respiratory infections, ear mites, fleas and worms but they are survivors and now have a good home.

16. Could it have been a feral kitten? |
|
It's always sad to see a dead animal run over in the road, and today I gently picked up a dead squirrel from the middle of the road and put it in the grass at the side, because it seems so heartless for people to keep on running over its dead body.
But maybe the kitten was nobody's fault?

We took in a stray on a cold rainy March morning...or rather, she adopted us. She was on the front porch, and when I went to get the newspaper, she just waltzed right in. A few weeks later, she gave birth to 4 kittens.
We named her 'Tastrophe.
