What offends you?
Me? I hate when people say phrases like "That's Gay" because they're using the term Gay, a term used to define a group of people, in a negative sense. Everytime my nieces/nephews use it I correct them on it and I do the same for my friends kids.

In fact, I don't think I've ever said a bad word about anyone or anything.

4. When dissent is taken as anti-patriotism or anti-Americanism
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 01:20 PM by bertha katzenengel
When it's assumed that because I loathe the current president's administration, and think that he was illegally put into that office, and think that he is an idiot, that I loathe my country.

And bumper stickers that say things like

I LOVE CATS - THEY TASTE LIKE CHICKEN

and

IS YOUR CAT MISSING? CHECK MY TIRE TREADS

I'd think they were funny if I could let myself believe the fuckers weren't serious.

Again, no offense meant.

6. I agree.......I still catch myself wanting to say crap....
like that sometimes, not because I want to hurt, but because it is the slang thing...I always retreat and rephrase. I have a family member who is gay, and IT really does offend me. The words that we use so freely can really hurt when folks actually pay attention to what is said. Most of the time that attention is elsewhere. I especially dislike bigots, and the words Fa**ot and Ni**er are very much on the tips of their tongues. I tell my Repuke Relatives that it is the Racist and Sexist attitudes they espouse that offends me the most. Anymore,I just jump right on them.......they are learning not to use that language around me.

24. I find this very interesting, as...
in the crowd I grew up with in high school, many of the slang insults that carry sexist etc. connotations to many people didn't have those meanings.

Sorry in advance for potential offense by using the words, even in quotes.

for example, I still have to stop and think for a second when people talk about 'bitch' being misogynist, because where I come from, it has no gender component - it simply describes a certain type of obnoxious person - someone who is overly demanding and shouts or uses abusive language to get their way ('bastard', also being gender-neutral for us, meant a person who takes advantage of people's good natures to get their way in a similarly obnoxious fashion). Similarly, 'fag', where I come from, has no derogatory component, and refers to someone who embodies the old flamboyant gay man stereotype (or similar used in an adjectival sense), regardless of sexuality - if the person in question's sexuality is important to the description, you have to specify it, as the term doesn't include it, and doesn't carry any judgement.

25. I used all of those words....
without a second thought, but of course now you simply can't. (and I don't)... Of course if the anger button gets pushed when I mix it up with a Freeper look out. My favorite term for their attitude is "PIG", it fits so well. I agree when we were young, words were different. Interesting Post.

It's just about never targeted appropriately; almost always used in bully tactics.

I'm not 100% without sin in this regard, either, but I make it a point to pick fights with the bigger kids :)

19. What offends me is when Republicans dont ask the same questions we do.
And they just pull a bunch of facts and twist them so it makes Reagan, Bush Sr. or Bush Jr. look good, because, heaven forbid, we shouldnt question our leaders even though the constitution guarantees us our right to.

23. That really annoys me too
The thing that probably offends me most in life is when ignorant people make snap judgments about others. I guess it really gets to me because people do it all the time to me. People are far too ready to presume things instead of minding their own damn business like they need to.

26. Stupidity by choice.

I can understand it if someone had to drop out of school at a young age and had to go to work due to circumstances beyond their control and they don't have much of a formal education. But if someone made it through the high school level and they still don't have enough common sense to pour piss out of a boot with the directions printed on the heel then it is their own damn fault and I don't feel sorry for them.

27. What offends me?
A president who cares nothing about the people of America, who's too scared to meet with a woman whose son was killed in his illegal war, who WANTS the price of gas to go up higher so he can get richer, who speaks for a few minutes about the hurricane bearing down on New Orleans then moves instantly into his Iraq war mantra, who wants to take away my freedom to be happy by stopping me from legally marrying Greekspeak, the man I have loved for over ten years and who wants to make the political structure in Washington a theocracy.

THAT'S what offends me!

Oh, and people who call me a "fag".

29. Mobile billboards
those things hitched to trucks that drive around all day, consuming gas for the sole purpose of brain washing people into buying a certain type of frozen burrito. Probably a good thing I dont own a rocket launcher.

And those loud new video screens blaring commercials at you while your filling up your car at the gas station are really bad too. These are the sorts of things that offend me - not 4 letter words, nudity or whatnot.

In general when folk say things which might offend me, my response is more one of distain for the people concerned than offence.

What really gets up my goat is ignorance, bigotry, ideological blindness - the irony is that I find it worse when displayed by folk with whom I agree. :grr:
