Best car insurance to go with? |
|
I'm changing from Allstate because they're charging me through the nose for my car insurance. Only 1 accident and 1 ticket in the last 3 years...
Any ideas?

Progressive. Lowered mine by $700 / year and I live in Philadelphia.

I switched from State Farm to Progressive just because State Farm is so red.

10. Yes, that's what I'm thinking.. |

Progressive has a great custom insurance so we can pick out what we need and save us major bucks.

20. Here's another vote for Progressive. |
|
We switched from Geico a year and a half ago. Progressive had the better rate. I really like the Progressive web site, and the customer service has been great. They also provide very clear explantions of how they arrived at your rate.

2. Erie, if your state has it |
|
it was rated highly by Consumer Reports in 1989 or 1990. We've had it since we moved to Maryland 15 years ago; no complaints so far.

I got sued after an accident by a woman who had a long history of stopping quickly and getting rear-ended. Even knowing this, USAA chose to give her $10,000 rather than fight it, then promptly DOUBLED my insurance rates. I switched to Progressive. I've had no claims since then, but dealing with Progressive so far has been a pleasure.
On edit: That was over 3 years ago and Progressive STILL gives me better rates than USAA would, even with nothing on my current record.

It's a mutual insurance company, so it's policyholder-owned. Great service, good rates, and you get an annual dividend check.

11. When I switched from State Farm (mentioned in earlier posts)... |
|
I switched both my car insurance and homeowner's insurance from State Farm. I went with Progressive for my auto insurance because they were 100% blue, but they don't have homeowner's insurance.
I went with Amica for homeowner's insurance. Consumer Reports magazine rated them the highest overall. I don't remember whether the rating was just for homeowner's insurance or whether it was overall. They checked my credit report before giving me insurance.

13. Don't get anymore tickets or accidents |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 07:59 PM by LynneSin
I hate to say it, but that's the only way to keep the insurance down and although accidents can't be helped, tickets can be. And I should know - I've had some outrageous rates because of my past sins.
I've been with Nationwide all of my driving life. I also buy cars that have better rates - 4 doors better than 2 (ack I sound like something out of Animal Farm), ABS, Airbags, Security. My state also offers a discount if you go through a defensive driving class (10% savings each year for 3 years for 6 hours of sheer torture) and finally, because I've been with my company for 20 years I get an additional discount. I know alot of folks switch to Progressive because it's blue, but for me it's also an extra $400/year.
And finally - if you get a ticket with points, at least try to fight them in court if you can. And if you're in a car accident, if you can make arrangements to either pay cash or not use your insurance (incase it's their fault) that works out well too.
It's a sad racket but unfortunately we pay for the sins of others (those driving without insurance).
Good Luck!!

I checked quotes from a number of other companies (including AIG, Progressive, and Geico), and most of they were quoting double (if not worse) that what I'm already paying. Don't think so!

For some reason out of the clear blue sky they wanted to double my premiums. No tickets or accidents either. I've used Progressive ever since and have been pleased with them.
