Poll question: On a scale, how TACKY and PATHETIC is this?
Okay,

the scenario.

Take a well-established individual, making close to 40,000 per year. Kids all grown. This individual has won thousands of dollars sometimes due to lotteries, bingo, you name it. This person is lucky.

This person at work who is her friend was thinking of putting out a box in the staff room, because her pal is moving into an apartment. Maybe she will take up a collection to help furnish her friend's new apartment? You know, get things for the house. :eyes:

I mean, this is not a person who has come across hard times. On a scale of 10 being the most tacky thing one can hear about this week, and 0 being well "I've seen way more tacky"
What would you rate this case?

21. Don't think human resources will allow that --
At least in our office, it wouldn't be allowed, just like other appeals for money among employees.

Check with the "higher-ups" on this one. Don't get yourself into trouble.

4. LOL
haha. :)

And you know what, I'm a pretty generous person, but I will save my money for people who maybe have had a loss, not some spoiled co-worker.

I had to laugh when hearing this story today. :)

10. Pretty tacky. It would be nice if someone in charge would
politely suggest that any money collected go to an organization aiding the hurricane victims, or the tsunami victims, or other worthy cause.

Unless this fortunate individual has just been picked clean in a nasty divorce, I don't see why he/she would merit a collection.

13. I would say 40, 000 $ isn't that much.
And unless they are forcing anyone to donate, I don't think it's tucky. There is sucker born every minute-if they want to donate to this lady's moving expenses, so be it. I personally wouldn't, but sounds like they are just planning to put a box for anonymous donations-that wouldn't bother me one bit.

15. Nauseatingly tacky
But then I'm not too fond of ANY of the work collections that seem to go one so often (except the ones for people who really have had a blow - their house burned down or they have a sick child). It seems like every week there's some sort of collection where I work - "do you want to contribute to so-and-so's retirement gift?" "do you want to contribute to what's-her-name's baby shower?" "do you want to chip in for whoziwhatsit's birthday?". I just smile and say "no" now - I like my co-workers but they're co-workers not bosom buddies (sure, there are a few bosom buddies but so-and-so, what's-her-name and whoziwhatsit are NOT them!). It starts to feel like extortion.

16. That brings up a personal story
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 06:16 PM by Darth_Kitten
A few years ago my sister and her family's house burned down. Lost everything....

I wasn't expecting anything myself , but not one person who KNEW about it even offered me a single comment on it. Maybe offer some old clothes for the kids? Something, anything. :(

Guess the headlines in the paper, like "Family of 10 loses house in fire" just couldn't stir up any compassion. :eyes:

(happy note, my sister's community rallied around them) :)

Baby showers, weddings, funerals, birthdays... but, never for a new residence.

22. That's a conservative's idea of "charity"
they only look inward thinking of themselves. Raising money for an ivory backscratcher.
