3. Actually @ last report Cafe du Monde is dry. That side of town
on the river side is prety high ground. That also includes the Bywater.
They are @ the top of the bowl (near the rim) of NOLA.

When I always expressed concern about flooding my ex used to tell me we lived in the best place in town because it was so high. We were 3 blocks off the river. Cafe du Monde is right on the river @ the levee.

4. With the levee failure, they said the whole CBD and Uptown will flood
Maybe they will luck out, but the mayor is trying to evacuate *everything* now.

6. Yes the CBD will be jacked up. The water in the Quarter is coming from
the sewers. So until the water reaches the level where it can push up enough to reach the rim on the river side jackson square and the river side of the quarter will be ok all the way down decatur st past Elysian fields into the Bywater just before the lower 9th ward.

A beignet recipe, similar to those you might find in the French Market of New Orleans, Louisiana.
INGREDIENTS:

1 envelope active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water (approx. 105°)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup evaporated milk
7 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup shortening, softened
oil for deep frying
powdered sugar
PREPARATION:

In large bowl, sprinkle yeast over the warm water; stir to dissolve and let stand for 5 minutes. Add sugar, salt, beaten eggs, and evaporated milk. Whisk or use electric mixer to blend thoroughly. Add 4 cups of the flour; beat until smooth. Add shortening; gradually blend in remaining flour. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least 4 hours or overnight. Roll out on floured board to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into 2 1/2 to 3-inch squares. Deep fry at 360° for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly browned on both sides. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle generously with powdered sugar. Serve hot with coffee.
Dough can cut and frozen, separated in container with waxed paper.

Makes 4 to 5 dozen.

8. You can get them right here in town, but best is to go to Cafe du Monde in
NOLA, get a plate of 'em with chickory coffee, babying your hangover on a Sunday morning while listening to the local jazz big bands performing for free in Jackson Square.

I hope you can do that. In fact maybe Mrs. MM and I should go on a trip there with you guys sometime so we can enjoy this, when conditions permit.

9. Sounds like a plan!
Is this chickory coffee similar to the chicory coffee referred to in "Gone With The Wind" (and does it taste better than it sounded in the book?)

10. I'm kinda 'meh' on chickory coffee. If you go to any New Orleans themed
store you can probably get the freeze dried Community Coffee packages, and you can make some chickory and try for yourself. Wouldn't surprise me if some place like Central Markup sells it.

It's just a New Orleans thing. The cafe au lait is probably a better idea with the beignets.

12. I don't think it's too late for you.
It's been quite a few years, but there's a Cafe Du Monde in Underground Atlanta. Don't ask me why the only Cafe du Monde outside of Louisiana is in Atlanta.
