Scariest. Movie. Ever.
I confess, after six hours of horrifying news, worry, disgust and shame, I'd like to check out something a little less terrifying, courtesy of Hollywood Video. Fictional horror films only, please. Based on a true story is fine, but no "scary/gore-filled" documentaries. Sci-Fi okay.

The Hypnotist
(aka: Saiman)
(1999)
review by Big McLargehuge
I had no idea what to expect when I popped The Hypnotist into my DVD player. Would it be gross out new wave Japanese splatter, a large scale crime drama, or supernatural demon-inspired antics? The answer was yes!

The Hypnotist is a fantastic film that draws inspiration from a novel of the same name by Keisuke Matsuoka and begins with three very unusual suicides, a groom at his wedding reception strangles himself with his tie, a seventy year old retired man leaps to his death, and a college runner literally runs until her body crumbles.

Just a little bit beyond reality is what I'm going for here. Preferably with a majorly scary premise/plot to keep me interested.

11. Not the scariest ever, but "Sisters" will take your mind off things
It's so bizarre. A Brian de Palma film (wrote and directed) starring a pre-"Superman" Margot Kidder as separated Siamese twins involved in a murder. The only gore is a bloody butcher knife. Strange and creepy, with a little black humor. Kidder is very appealing. Enjoy.

13. Okay, I actually went with 'Salem's Lot (2004).
'Cause I loved it so. For entirely personal reasons, I actually think it's MUCH better than the original, as unpopular as that is.

I passed on a curious little film some of you horror connoisuers might be familiar with--based on a Korean folk tale, two sisters, extreme weirdness--came out this year, I think.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

15. Scarey... I'm not sure what that means any more
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 03:28 AM by Ignoramus
Shocking isn't really the same as scarey. If it's not shocking than what does it mean to be Scarey?

There's this memory of a movie that scared the poo out of me when I was young. I don't know what it's called, but at the end this thing that looks like testicles that had been cared for by elderly folks, rushes out and tries to kill this kid.

The most disturbing film I've seen is Henry, portait of a serial killer. To describe how disturbing it is, there were these punk kids in the theatre, heckling and laughing. There is a scene where Henry and his freind kill a family, and the punk kids were silent for the rest of the movie. The film is not sensational at all. It is horrifyingly non-sensational and real seeming.

But, I'm not sure how worth while it is to see, unless you are a punk kid...

Since I wrote this, I found better commentary:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099763/

It is a great film. There is a lesson to be learned from the film. If you've learned it already, you won't learn more by seeing it again. It's just really painful to watch. It made me feel like I had a rock in my stomach for the rest of the night.

Some of the other movies mentioned were IT, The Shining, The Exorcist.

"The Grudge" absolutely scared the bejeezus out of me. I had to sleep on the couch with the light on. Most horror movies don't have that effect.

Another that I found very creepy was "Stir of Echos." A very nice movie in many ways, but a couple of the scenes with the dead girl really got to me. Horror is very individual.

43. I'm a big fan or horror movies
Here are some of my favorites:

Audition

http://imdb.com/title/tt0235198/

You won't sleep for days after this one.

The Ring

http://imdb.com/title/tt0298130/

If you're not into horror, this one is a good movie to start with. It's creepy without ever being really scary.

Carnival of Souls

http://imdb.com/title/tt0055830/

This one will stay with you. Absolutely haunting.

Cabin Fever

http://imdb.com/title/tt0303816/

This is a good little independant flick, but relies on some gross-outs. Don't watch while eating pizza.

Shaun of the Dead

http://imdb.com/title/tt0365748/

A zombie movie tribute (sorry, we don't use the zed word) that's got some mild scares and a lot of funny moments.

46. Sisters (A movie from Thailand)
No, not the movie starring Margot Kidder. No, not "A Tale of Two Sisters" This is a different movie that was recently released on DVD.

I'm not sure if one would classify this one as the scariest movie ever, but it HAS stuck with me long after I watched it. Still does.

Made in Thailand. Here is a description:

Plot: After staying in a motel room where a prostitute was murdered, a band of teenage musicians are cursed by her ghost. They visit a Buddhist monk who reveals what horrors awaited them, as they must all face the curse of a beheaded prostitute.

Overview: Curse, murder, and revenge lie hidden within the air conditioning vent. Based on a chilling true story that rocked and rattled Thailand. A band of teenage musicians are drawn to an unmentionable fate inside a cursed motel. Within room #409, hanging down from the air conditioning vent, a mysterious strip of white cloth lures each of the band members to investigate. After having visions of a woman with long hair and demonic eyes they visit a Buddhist monk who reveals what horrors awaited them, as they must all face the curse of a beheaded prostitute.

John Carpenter's 'The Thing,' although it vioates the "no gore" rule. It's one of my favorite horror sci-fi movies ever.
