Does everybody know that there may be lead in computer cables?
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 05:47 AM by The Backlash Cometh
just bought a Dell Pocket PC -- Axim X30 (Yeah, I know, I generally boycott Dell, but at least this one I picked up for dirt cheap so there wasn't much profit margin.) and in the manual it says:

WARNING: Handling the cord on this product, or cords associated with accessories with accessories sold with this product, will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash your hands after handling the cord.

After reading the warning I wondered if the State of California did not require this warning, would I even be aware that there is lead in the cable? And if other computer cables have lead in them? If not, does the fact that the product is made in China and the distributor is Dell have any bearing on this matter?

And lastly, isn't there more than just reproductive problems associated with the exposure to lead?

1. Also, don't lick it or chew on it

I assume that if you breath in California - like I do - this is likely to be the least of the threats to your health.

2. If it's made in China.....
It's probably got lead in it.
I noticed on my last trip to CA, there are those signs on damn near everything.

3. What do you think about coffee cups that are made in China?
I've always had my doubts about anything that was glazed in China; and wonder what legislation stopped the regulation that would have prevented lead from so many of our products? You would think this would be nationally reported story. Maybe it's the next Republican caused crisis?

I don't know about the content of glazes. I just could imagine the Chinese slowly poisoning us as we pay for the privilge. The seem to think more "long term" than we do.

I know a lot of plastics we import from them have a high lead content. And plastics degrade pretty quick, glazes probably not so much.

5. Maybe we should make it a Democratic issue that the next
time the Dems are in control, we will have all our products re-reviewed by a secular FDA board to make sure that we're not slowly being poisoned? I'm with you. Something stinks in Denmark.
