Buckle up for a mini-rant called, "Welcome to my World of Complete and Total Idiocy" or "Dilbert's Boss Ain't Got Nothin' on Mine":

Hi, I'm a small business owner, but you'd never know it! Why? Because I can't be bothered with it. Oh sure, my employees need my approval before they can do anything at my business, (like paying bills so utilities don't get shut off.)--and they'll get it as soon as I'm done with my golf game. Or maybe in a few days when I'm back from the secret vacation I took. Or fuck that, maybe I'll extend the vacation, let them know I'm out of town halfway through, then hope for the best. Why? Because I'm a goddamned irresponsible idiot.

When I get back to town, I'll email my assistant a litany of things that I only know are problems because my assistant told me they were. I won't say I know about them because the assistant told me. Rather, I will act as if I knew all along and will make sure to impress upon my employees that this problem, (yeah, the one I ignored for a week), must be dealt with immediately. I will also ask for updates on projects that I never actually told my employees about at all and will act shocked that they did not know of them. Why? Say it with me, Because I'm a goddamned irresponsible idiot!

i work for a fortune 500 and the bosses are no different.

one of the bosses we have took a big month long vacation when a software release was due to roll out...and was unreachable until he got back....irresponsible prick.

Although I can safely say that in this case it's pathological idiocy.
I don't want to put out a lot of detail here, but this guy had this business handed to him as a family "proving ground." Think Bush and his early business pursuits.
If properly managed, the business could be a great thing. Unfortunately, micro-managing absenteeism combined with a total lack of honesty, communication, or competence is not going to do it.

6. I worked for a family owned company once

the great-grandfather had founded it, the grandfather had made it better and the Son-In-Law and his Wife spent the cash and played "CEO", the grandson was trying to fix things but had a very sensitive ego so it made it hard to get anything done.

that person is not really an idiot more than he is an irresponsible, arrogant, a$$hole. Sometimes I think hardworking people who play by the rules are the idiots, since we seem to be doing all of the work. Is that very smart?

As for us, well, maybe we are too. Until I get a new job I don't have much choice other than to show up every day and keep working though. It helps in keeping that roof over the old head.
