Well, it appears that the New Orleans Zoo and Aquarium both survived
http://news.mongabay.com/2005/0830-new_orleans_aquarium.html

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans apparently survived Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed according to a report in The Baltimore Sun. Hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana city Monday.

According to Ron Forman, president of the Audubon Nature Institute that oversees the city's aquarium and zoo, only a few flamingos died and was little other loss of animal life. The Audubon Zoo also fared well in the storm. (more at link)

1. That's Even Better News Than it Sounds
Can you imagine if terrified and hungry lions, tigers, and elephants were roaming the city?

3. How long can they hang on with no electricity, no water and
plans to evacuate NOLA? I wish there was some update on what plans are being made or can be made to sustain them....

9. I believe the aquarium that was damaged so badly was Gulfport
which was totally destroyed.

10. I don't know about caring "more" but I care quite a bit for them.
Primarily because they were forced there against their will and have nowhere else to go period.

11. Thank the stars!
I feel really bad about all the strays and ferals in NO who didn't survive--I know one lady who tried to catch all the ferals in order to get them to safety, but many of them weren't caught. It's terrible, but as we all know already by experience, the animals are the last ones that are thought of in times of disaster.

The NO Audubon Zoo has one of the premier facilities in the world, and while I generally despise zoos, this one is different. Most of the animals have habitats which are ideal for them, and they have a captive breeding program designed to save many animals from extinction. For these reasons and several others, I feel so much better now, and perhaps we can put our minds to rest on this portion of the tragedy unfolding before us.

14. Yes, or so it appears from this article.
It was the Gulfport Aquarium that was destroyed, apparently the NO Aquarium and Zoo are both relatively intact.
