It seems that professing disdain for Cameron's "Titanic" guarantees admission into the cool club. (In the past, you were required to lambast the output of populist filmmakers like Frank Capra, John Ford, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.)

Well ya know what? I loved the bloody thing. Gloriously melodramatic. I'm glad it made a billion, and it deserved every Oscar it got.

Sharpen your knives, boys and girls. I have a hankering to defend "Forrest Gump" next.

On edit: Spelling error on the damn title...which *really* doesn't help me, here.

1. Well, that's OK by me
As long as you realize it's melodramatic schlock... oh and that the old lady died at the end (had religious wars with my friends about this point).

Forrest Gump though... That's indefensible. :-)

3. Was that the sequel to "Titanic"?
j/k, I kind of like it too.

"Titantric" would be a good name for a porno film

10. LOL...
...still, wouldn't tantric mean no 'money shot'? I think the porn-pun would have to involve to first syllable of the ship name rather than the last...

15. That'll work
provided it's hyphenated (bi-) and the box cover only features women to reassure the male hetero-centric consumers...

5. I liked Forrest Gump, but I don't like Titantic.
However, the Titantic film is not that terrible. I don't bash any movie that has a good story with a beginning, middle and the end, but it was too long and too much DiCaprio.

Forrest Gump is a good nostalgia piece.

I can deal with it!

6. Gump didn't do it for me
I liked Titantric the first time I saw it. Hadn't seen anything quite like it, not being one who sees a bunch of big movies. But, hell, I would watch Kate Winslet in a movie about her watching TV for 2 hours.

11. All time greatest review of Forrest Gump
From Ruthless Reviews:

Take your pick, my friends: romanticizing stupidity, demonizing the counterculture, trivializing history, or boring the shit out of more discriminating audiences. America, Oscar, and just about everybody, it seems, were dead fucking wrong about this affront to good taste, cinematic nobility, common sense, and the simple process of being entertained. Tom Hanks, angling for a Nobel Peace Prize or something, has never been worse and will not be removed from my shit list as a result. Outside of the fact that there is no reason whatsoever to give a shit about someone so blissfully retarded and narcissistic (“Why don’t you love me,” he asks, as if one had to explain that it was sick and twisted to date a man with severe brain damage), I hate this film with a white-hot intensity because it endorses -- not implicitly, mind you, but with big fucking capital letters -- the reactionary idea that ‘tis better to coast through life without an education, the power of reason, or a social conscience, lest you get AIDS and die like the atheistic, egghead dog that you are.

and the sad part is that the author of the book "got" it. He understood the irony of his character.

And Titanic was a good popcorn film.

Now Forrest Gump on the other hand...I can't condone a film that celebrates stupidity without any sense of irony.

12. I loved Titanic
Kate and Leo ... James Cameron ... yeah, it was a great movie.

My emotions were seriously jerked back-and-forth. Everything about the movie worked for me.

And I cried for the first time since Old Yeller died.

I also liked "Waterworld" and "The Postman", which all the Cool Kids hated, too. I guess the Cool Kids will have to make do without me.

including sappy songs and mindless movies.

(But not including Bob Seger's music... blech)

Ummm...sure. I've never seen it, so I'm in no position to say anything good or bad.

But I understand what you are saying about the "cool club." It is so damned high-schoolish.

18. No I cant deal with that.
I am available to provide your lobotomy next week. Please make an appointment with my secretary. ;-)

ACTUALLY, I dont disdain the movie because I think it is cool to do so, but because I genuinely think it's a really lousy movie.

When this movie first came out I was a brand new member of AOL and on the AOL movie message boards, the "Titanic" board was the most popular by tens of thousands of posts. Those who were in praise of the movie, it seemed THAT was the "cool club". To try to disdain or criticize the movie at the time brought about a hell of alot of piling on by fans of the movie. Critics of the movie Titanic were told to "get a life" or accused of not having ANY taste in movies. I recall one adult women who hated titanic and said so on the AOL board got a death threat on the same board from some 13 year old kid who was an enormous fan of the movie.

I didnt get to see Titanic untill it came out on Cable tv. (I didnt go out to the theater. Instead I always waited for movies to be released on cable) I watched it out of curiosity from all the hype surrounding the film. Was it as good as the fans claimed it was? Was it as bad as the critics said it was? Well, as it turned out, after finally seeing it with my own eyes, I took the side of the critics. I didnt like the movie at all.

21. Absolutely not, GD. While I may not love it to death due to a few
almost campy performances, how can I not love a gorgeous lavish film that can be seen by an eight year old and and eighty year old... and that they can both talk to each other about it. How special does a filmmaker have to be to make a film like that?
