1. I think there are a lot of bird people on DU!
We've got two of them -- Olive, a Pacific Parrotlet, who's 4 1/2, and Logos, a Meyer's Parrot, who's 2 1/2.

30. There's Murphee the Tiel and Baylee the Bun
I don't know how old Murphee is, I'm guessing 8 months or so? (I don't know why, she hasn't changed colour in the last little while?) and Baylee will be three next month. :)

49. Olive and Logos
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 09:47 PM by Whitacre D_WI
Logos likes wine:

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/7df18137/bc/Yahoo!+Photo+Album/__sr_/Logos.jpg?bcvMas_AGyqsBuaR

NO, I don't let her actually drink it.

And Olive likes pet:

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/7df18137/bc/Yahoo!+Photo+Album/__sr_/Olive.jpg?bcvMas_ARzGxELTN

In fact, she likes pet SO much, she'll run down and bite my toe if she's not getting enough!

On edit: Damn! Yahoo won't let me piggyback image hosting. Oh well. Click the freakin' links ya lazy bums.

64. Bird people, yahoo! I have four.
Congo African Gray Zephyr, Sun Conure Belle, Monk parakeet CurleyJo, and cockatiel Izzie.

The funniest thing about a gray is their ability to talk. But what's even funnier is when they are learning things. I always say to my birds, "What's up buttercup!" when I come home, and Zephyr is learning the phrase. However, when they're learning they'll sometimes substitute words that sound like what they're supposed to be saying, so they go though word phases until they have it right.

For three weeks, I'd come home and he'd look at me and say, "what's up, big butt??!!" Now that has morphed to "What's up, butterbutt!?"

It's pretty funny!

I have only 3 cats in-house, 2 AWOL like Bush. Have had tarantulas, caymans, iguanas, scorpions, dogs...but now am pretty much just settled down with kitties. Have not had good luck with birds, so I will do the avian population a favor, by not taking them in!!!

6. I have a year-and a half-old cat.
Her name is Carlotta, and she is a total spazz. I can't wait until she calms down. Thank god she isn't in heat right now...that's just terribly unpleasant to observe. Her good points: she sits in my lap as I type messages, and can play fetch like a trained dog (I can't get over that!)

She's mostly black, with white paws and white nose/mouth/neck area. And she has two gigantic gree/brown eyes that look as though they have perpetually just seen a ghost.

7. Too many pets here
I have 3 dogs and a foster dog. All are Australian Shepherds. Two of my dogs are deaf with funky eyes as is my foster girl. That's due to the poor practice of breeding merle to merle. My deaf ones know hand signals and they see good enough to chase the cats. If I can ever figure out how to insert a photo, I have many of them.

The dogs are two brothers, Hushpuppy (deaf) and Catfish, Neo (deaf, adopted from Florida) and my foster girl (mostly deaf), Rebecca.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about deaf dogs go here:

http://www.deafdogs.org/

My foster girl, Rebecca, is listed under adoptable dogs in the Aussie section.

Double merles
Many are deaf and some breeders "cull" (kill) the overly white ones when they are a couple of weeks old. I use floor stomping, turning lights off and on, really anything to get their attention. My deaf ones have been easier to train than my hearing boy.

27. Dalmatians
Well, once you have one deaf dog, you want another! I fostered a deaf Dalmatian last summer, he was adopted to a great home. It was my first experience with a Dalmatian and I really loved him, fostering can be tough, it's hard to say good-bye. Many breeds with a good bit of white have a percentage of dogs born deaf. Dalmatians have the highest percentage of bilateral and unilateral deafness. If you look at the adoptable dogs on deafdogs.org, you'll see many of the breeds with deafness. I'm on a deafdogs yahoo list and there are many deaf owners of deaf dogs. Many people use ASL for their hand signals for their deaf dogs.

If you get a deaf dog, I know you'll be glad.

55. Homeless pets
I'm partial to deaf dogs but there are so many dogs available in rescue and in shelters. Rescues have almost any breed or type dog anyone could want. Most rescues will arrange transportation to get the dog to you and they are fully vetted and screened. Both my dog, Neo, and my foster girl, Rebecca, were spotted in shelters and saved. Both had 1 day left before being euthanized. I just foster occasionally but there are people who devote their lives to saving and finding homes for homeless pets. I've heard of rescues for rabbits and I'll bet there are some for birds and reptiles.

Your old dog shows how adaptable animals can be, they seem to enjoy life even when their hearing and eyesight fades.

8. Mr. Tinkles (Little Al), Rudy Valentino aka The White Guy & Ramona
All Cats

Ramona Is a Calico Persian Cross who is going to die this week
(My Sister will not let me get her put to sleep)

Rudy Is a stray that we took in 1 1/2 years ago and he is an Albino cat that we call the White Guy and he is a huge cat and he might be a Turkish Angora or a Turkish Van

Little Al (Mr PoopooTinkles) is my baby boy and he is a Red Tabby Persian that is the size of a 6 month old kitten but he is 2 1/2 years old. He is as mean as hell and If anyone remembers my posts about him not liking me well he is attached to me now. He is one hell of a stinker and he jumps The White Guy all of the time.

the sweater wearing Dachsund/chewy. I got Blue online from a rescue; she addicted to her tennis balls; Joey is disfunctional and always cold; he came straight out of the Carson shelter, and a drug addicted rock star gave us Winky.

Then we have Boomer the 25 lb African tortoise who FINALLY got an igloo dog house this weekend. He eats romaine lettuce, apples, corn and watermelon. He came from a rescuer in West Hollywood who had a few too many.

And I have 12 koi and pond comets, in a 2500 gal pond, the largest of whom is about 2 lbs and named Moby.

And I feed the hummingbirds!

I don't think the ants count.

We have a brand new kitten named "Tipitina" or "Tippi" for short. She is four months old and a bundle of energy. She joins, Barney, the eldest of the YaYa animals, a twelve year old cat.

We also have Lucy a very sweet and lovable Golden Retriever and Harry a long-haired Guinea Pig.

I am deathly allergic to anything with hair or feathers, but my family would get rid of me before the animals went. I live on Allegra and Singulair.

22. My two cats
I've spoken often of them (I love dogs too). Spencer is a beautiful black domestic long-hair. He's a stray that I rescued 71/2 years ago. Very affectionate. Madison is a tiny tuxedo cat that I got from the same vet, also about 7 years ago. She is insane-totally feline. I live alone and they are wonderful companions whom I can't imagine being without. If I wasn't gone about 9-10 hours a day I would love to have a dog-but I don't think it's fair at the moment. I had a darling mix-breed named Paige for 9 years and when she passed I was grief-stricken.

Eddie, the West Highland Terror
Always a sweetie and funny and playful UNTIL I am on the phone - then stands by the kitchen counter and YOWLS for a treat to shut him up. Nothing shuts him up - not even a treat - just snarfs it down and begins yowling for more. I have to toss him outside and close the door and thn he begins barking like a maniac - UNTIL I am OFF the phone.

Today I tried "pretending" to be on the phone to work on this annoying habit - no dice - just looked at me sweetly - how does that stinker know when it is a REAL phone converstion??

29. My two wonderful kitties
are 8 years old short haired domestics, and were litter mates, so they have been together all their lives.

Teddy is all white, except for two small black "eyebrows" on his head. He has lovely pink ears and nose, and beautiful blue eyes. He weighs 19 POUNDS.

Tigger brown and black tiger stripes with a tiny white patch at the left of his nose, and white paws. He is the more affectionate of the two, although both like to cuddle. Tigger weighs 16 pounds.

Teddy, according to his vet, "has issues", and is currently taking (well, being given) Fluoxetine, which is the generic Prozak.

My sweethearts came into my life 3 years ago last month. They had been declawed about 2 years before they came, so they are strictly indoor cats unless they are on their leashes and with me.

32. One cute little dog
We adopted him from the humane society two years ago. My husband had went there earlier in the day and saw him and spent time with him. He took me there and begged me to agree to get him. We filled out the application and picked him the next afternoon. He is a 10 year old American eskimo. He likes us and whoever we like and introduce him too. He tries to protect us from scary things that my hurt us. He even growls at bugs. We sometimes wonder about his former life. He has bonded with us quite well. I don't know if he'd be happy to see his former people again or not.

33. Chaucer is our cat.
He's big and he's black and he's extremely good at loving the entire family. He's about a year and a half, and he's one of the most affectionate cats I've ever seen.

My daughter and I went to the Humane Society to look at the kitties and saw this little black kitten in a cage. Material Girl ran over to the cage and that kitten came up and rubbed at the bars purring. She was in love from that second on, I think.

We took him into a get acquainted room and he wasted no time in jumping into her lap and curling up purring... Amidst the chaos of barking dogs and slamming doors that was one of the most mellow cats I've ever seen. Usually a shelter is such a stress for cats and this guy was oblivious.

We put him on a 24 hour hold and took daddy back in for a visit. Daddy was hooked the second he saw that kitten playing with Material Girl and when he saw how she laughed at the cat.

We brought him and home and he prommptly manifested an upper Resp infection that required pills. He's spit them out, but never got mad at me jamming pills in his mouth. A couple weeks later my daughter turned up with ringworm. After three trips to the vet and a trip to the Doc's office for her we were all cleared up except for the huge bald spots on the cat...

He meets her at the door when she comes in from school and he sleeps on her bed when she's gone. She dresses him in doll clothing and he just purrs. They chase each other up and down the hall--he chases her then they reverse and she chases him! She feeds him and asks to clean his box sometimes (I'm dreading the day when she figures out that isn't a fun job) and she worries over him.

And did I mention that the cat sleeps in bed with my husband and I at night?

WE love him and he does a fine job loving us back!

Laura

Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 07:11 PM by ironflange
Three cats:

Nicki, the matriarch, six-year-old brown tabby

Sorry, only cat I have handy pics of.

She doesn't like me very much, prolly because I'm the one who clips her claws. A little standoffish, very protective of her turf, but fierce in her loyalties, especially toward Mrs. Ironflange. Edit: will eat any kind of cracker, Wheat Thins, Triscuits, etc, doesn't matter. I call her "Crackerz."

Cleo is a three-year-old shelter kitten. An area had a momma cat and her five daughters, all black, and this tiny thing came up to me and started talking. She hasn't stopped talking since. She's kinda dumb, but a real sweetheart, and we've discerned that she uses a different yowl depending upon whom she's looking for. Maybe she's not that dumb.

Amber, a tiny but extra-fuzzy tortie, just turned one, so she is still a complete psycho. Very affectionate with the human caretakers, but hides if anyone else comes over. Likes to chew on things, like a dog.

My daughter just got a leopard gecko, after badgering us for a year, but we admit it's really cute, though feeding time can be a gruesome sight. His/her name is Sen, taken from "Spirited Away."

Fish tank in family room: 2 blackskirts, 2 zebras, 3 glowlights, 1 orange/white molly (named Creamsicle), 1 panda cory, 2 snails.

Fish bowl on kitchen island: beautiful blue & red betta named Henry. He is an extremely friendly fish, loves to watch us work and have his back scratched. Has a snail for a pal.

We have a bunch of mealworms for the gecko, but don't consider them pets.

Jeez, I hope somebody reads this whole thing.

53. I did! Nice Pic. Reminds me of the cat my mother let go stray on me while
I was in college . Couldn't take her and mom didn't see why a cat needed to be kept indoors. I still miss Dolly, and resent my mother for not taking care of her.

Sigh.

Mr. Politicat and I have three kitties, two his and one mine, at least by marriage.... the truth is more random.

From the eldest: Simone. Short for Simonicat. Somewhere between 12.5 years and 16. I adopted her 10 years ago when her owner, a dear friend, was murdered, and none of us remember how long he had had her. *VERY* Talkative with a whiskey and cigarettes voice. Getting arthritic, but still pretty good at getting around, though she needs help getting on the bed (but then, I need a stool for it, too.) and sometimes tries and fails for the couch. (Both are pretty high, since hte couch is a futon.) Possessive, and still not reconciled entirely to the fact that there are two other cats in the house.... after four years. Sleeps on the software cabinet under a desk lamp for warmth to help with her arthritis. She's mostly Chartreuse, and has the mitten paws (extra toes) that are common. 5 pounds, soaking wet. She's a dairy fiend - yogurt, buttermilk, butter, sour cream....

Angel - Mr. Politicat's first cat, first girl, and in her opinion, first and only wife (the ex and I are concubines kept solely for sex and cleaning). Mis-named, but that's normal. Called Angelica Angelacorum (after the plant) when I'm pissed with her. 4 pound Siamese with full regal attitude, but not nearly as chatty as Simone. Mr. Politicat is a wholly owned subsidiary of Angel, Inc. I am tolerated, and when possessed of a food stuff she happens to be interested in, looked upon affectionately. Bacon, rare beef, cheese and chicken rate high on this list. She's 13, but looks half her age. She sleeps on a "phone light" Mr. Politicat's BIL liberated from the Ma Bell Breakup - this is the light that went over a payphone and had the blue front.... it is a fluorescent, but it heats up nicely. Occassionally, she deigns to let Fuzzy share it with her.

Fuzzball - originally Mr. Politicat's second cat, our only male and now my devoted slave. Like the girls, he's "broken". He's 11 going on 12, 12 pounds (our "big" boy, especially compared to the girls who are TINY) black, but graying. Can't get a decent picture of him to save my life. Called Fuzzy for short. Fuzzy is ... quirky. He's incredibly mellow 80% of the time.... but when the spirit moves him, he's psycho. When we have allowed him in the bedroom with us (Mr. Politicat is actually allergic to cats, but loves them anyway and lives on Allegra, Benedryl, Claritin, etc. Thus, we keep kitties out of the bedroom in general.) I have to pick him up and carry him out when it's time to shut the door. If Mr. P. does it, Fuzzy has been known to attack Mr. P for taking him away from "mommy." Fuzzy also does not meow if you're looking at him - he just lip-synchs it. Fuzzy was born in a household with a very small child and was carried around by the neck for the first few months of his life - we think he suffered some hypoxia and a closed skull injury. Sweet but dumb is our boy. Likes laser pointers, milk jug ring caps, soft treats. Licks the gravy substance off wet catfood and won't eat the chunks. He sleeps whereever, but prefers any blanket, throw, pillow, etc. that smells like me. Given his druthers, Fuzzy will give me a black Halo and tangle my hair into dreds.

They are my children, and since Mr. P is broken, too, the ones we're getting.

Politicat

66. Heh, forgot the laser pointer
Nicki and Amber go absolutely berserk when this comes out. They would literally destroy the house if we moved it around in the right way. Cleo, though, seems unable to see it at all; she just sits there looking bewildered while the other two stampede about.

60. Terrific portrait of Nicki!
Outstanding photo -- her personality really comes through. I understand about the crackers -- one of our cats is nuts about toast! If you're eating toast, he just goes nuts!

Best to you -- :toast:

35. 2 cats -- a mother and son
Nightmare, is a black longhair, and Smoke, her son, is a gray longhair (see pics below!). Nightmare came to my door about 12 years ago, about 7 months old and pregnant. She had obviously had previous owners, who most likely abandoned her when she got pregnant. Took her in, she had a litter of 5 kittens. Smoke was the only one who was not black. He's a dark grey.

They are now 13 and 12 years old, respectively, and are such sweet, laidback cats. They don't act like cats much, either, as they come when they are called, and follow me wherever I go. They are both indoor cats -- I only let them out if I am outside with them. Even then, the patio door HAS to be left open, so they can run back inside at a moment's notice.

My son was 11 when Nightmare adopted us -- he's 22 now. A single mom and her son helping out a feline single mom and son.

The vet told me they are in perfect health, look and act much younger than their age, and should live for several more years. Not going to think about what I'm going to do when they finally get old and pass away.

36. Everything comes in 2s except one:
2 cats
2 horses
2 hens
2 grown sons
1 dog.

The poor dog needs a playmate. The hens and cats aren't interested. This place is just too small for another dog. Obviously, time to move.

37. 4 cats and a dog...and they all have nicknames:
Cookie aka Stumpy (her tail's longer than a bobcat, but definitely not standard size), Link aka The Purrminator, Tails aka Johnny Bench (he's polydactyl, and his paws look like baseball gloves), Waffles aka Velcro, and Wolfgang Amadogus aka Wolfasaurus Rex.

38. I work for two cats -- Rosie (female Siamese) & Dobbs (male Snowshoe)
Rosie is something like a four-legged infant, always running about crying, getting into things, looking for warm spots, etc. She is uncannily intelligent and loves her routines. She was a rescue -- her original owners were Australians living in the U.S., and when they had to return to Oz, they didn't want to subject her to the lengthy quarantine. So we adopted her. She demands a ton of attention, but she's very loving and silly.

Dobbs is also a rescue. He is a gorgeous cat, but his start in life was rocky, to say the least. Somehow, he lost his left rear leg to an animal bite. He was found by a rescue group, taken to a vet, who amputated the bad limb to save him. He was such a beautiful fellow that his infirmity didn't matter. He runs like a demon and is not slowed down in the slightest. He has a fascination with water and will sit at the bathroom sink for hours, watching, dipping, licking, washing. Dobbs is a master of physical comedy -- pratfalls, skids, full brodies, wide-eyed takes, the gamut.

Both cats are well-behaved, obedient (insofar as cats can be), clean, have great habits, and have never destroyed anything in the house.

Sometimes, however, I feel like I'm staff for these guys. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

41. Izzie
Isabella Rosselli is our female siamese. Probably the least huggable cat I have ever owned. Aside from my husband and two kids I have never loved anything more...During 9/11 she never left my side for a week, making sure I wasn't crying and if I was, trying her best to make me feel better. To this day, if I am in a funk, she notices it and does something stupid, like diving from the top of the fridge into the water dish...Here she is right now...sitting on my lap, although she refused to all day..She was also a stray as are our four other cats and our dog. We did purchase the hamster though...
My Nola, reminds me of your other cat, she is our alpha cat. She was frozen to the road when we found her and couldn't walk when we brought her home. She is very controlling and keeps the others in line. I love her so much because she is the glue that holds the house together. Sorry for the rant...But I love these guys so much..

It's amazing how they pick up on even the smallest of emotional cues from you.

Hey, you can rattle on as long as you want -- I know how much these guys mean to you!

44. Have a black lab and am considering
adopting another black lab, however, she has a torn ACL and I'm told the operation to fix same is very expensive. I'm really torn - she was trained as a bomb-sniffing dog and since she was injured is without work and has been "given up". One vet said her injury is not life threatening and she doesn't appear to be in any pain. What to do? Anyone have experience with this?

50. I have two dogs
Sparky is a pleasant old guy, I guess he's the best 100 pound dog I've ever had. We've been together 10 years. I adopted Sam on Cinco de Mayo, 2000. Sam likes to eat furniture. I had him on a webcam for a while, went through several couches, but despite the daily carnage I could never drum up a decent-paying subscriber base.

52. 2 wild and crazy kittens
Gray (named after Gray's Oatmeal Stout) and Sophie (just because). They are brother and sister, about three months old. Both are tabbies, Gray is.....gray and Sophie is a black edged tabby. Their wrestling matches are a sight to see. We'll have them neutered but not declawed. Someday we may move to a less OC community where they can enjoy some time outside and they'll need their claws. Our previous two tabbies were sisters who lived to be 14 and 18. They were occasional outside cats, but mostly inside.

54. PETS PETS
I hate PETS. I have many

DOGS:
3 dogs- 1st- Corgi dog, SugarBear who will be bred this Dec. Look for a urgent help me thread in FEB. 2nd- A weiner dog, nicknamed the little red bastard because he is. His real name is Rusty The Rascal 2. 3rd dog- a fluffy husky type dog that I saw on the TV. I knew no one in the south would adopt a dog like her so I ran down and bailed her out of jail.

CATS:
3 cats- 1st-Baybee Halo....cutest thing in the world. A munchkin cat who is silver and white and I paid 500 dollars for her because I fell in love over the internet. Some people fall in love and leave marriages over the net, others fall for kittens and spend big money.
2nd cat...Terra (ists) a ugly. if not the most ugly tortoise shell cat. Ugly..but we love her. 3rd cat..the MAN, Tino Martinez. Named for a baseball player who use to be a Yankee. Orange and White and rules the house. We carry him room to room because he doesn't like to move much and just uses us.

Fish:

Damn fancy ass guppies who wont stop having baby guppies. No idea what's going to happen after they outgrown the tank.
Also two Beta fish who look at each other all day and are cranky fish.

Get yourself a nice piscivorous cichlid, like a Dempsey or a Green Terror, and you won't have the guppy problem.

61. I have my big fat kitty named Olive and my sweet little ferrets
Olive is about six and she is very cranky. She is black with a big, jiggly white belly. Instead of meowing like a normal cat, she goes "maaaaaaa". It is the most miserable sound that I have ever heard come out of an animal. She is also vision-impaired and runs into things a lot. Despite her many personality flaws, we love her dearly. My ferrets are Akira and Tetsuo. They are both males. Akira is white with just a few black hairs and he has black and red eyes. He is deaf, but that doesn't stop him from being a normal crazy ferret. Tetsuo is a sable and he is quite fat. He has the cutest pudgy face and a squishy little tummy.

62. Ten cats and fish...
The ten cats I have discussed before:

Sandy
Whoopi
Nina
Sophia
Geddy Lee
Dickless Darrell
Kenny
Hormel
The Titty Boy
Bunny

We also have three aquariums.

One is a 10-gallon that contains Rosy Red minnows.

The 20-gallon contains two clown loaches, a Bala shark, a Betta and it at least used to contain an Otocinclus catfish. However, the Bala shark has eaten three of those already; the possibility of the fourth one having become fish food is pretty good.

In our 55-gallon aquarium, we have one fifteen-inch Sailfin Plecostomus catfish, one Firemouth cichlid and five Jack Dempsey cichlids, which are why we keep Rosy Reds. As the breakfast food commercial put it, live fish are an important part of a balanced diet.

65. Doggie and 2 Kitties
Doggie is Barney. 110# yellow lab. Lovable and loyal. Thinks he's a lap dog. When he tries to lay across my MS riddled legs, i have to be mean to him and nice to him at the same time. No way he can comprehend the pain it causes, but i have to make him move. Don't think he understand why he can't lie there. I ride around with him in the backseat of my convertible. (I have a harness that lets me seatbelt him in, so he doesn't become a missile.) He loves that and going down sliding boards.

My two kitties are Clarisse and Josephine. Both tiger tabbies about 6 or 7 years old. Also, lovable little beasties. Clarisse is very good friends with the big monster dog. Josephine is still a bit scared of him and his size. He's over 3 so i don't think she's going to get over that. Clarisse is my wife's favorite. The doggie is mine.

I'd post pics, but i've got no site to post them. Sorry.
