ATTENTION PET OWNERS!!! WE are heading for hard times
Please make sure your pets have extra food!
Who knows what's going to happen. Take time this weekend to buy a couple of LARGE bags of extra dry food or cases of canned food.

IF things work out great then you'll have more than enough and can donate it to the rescue.

Get your vets to fax health records and keep them in envelopes and ziploc bags and tape them to the top of kennels.

Also buy cases of water just for them.

I have a feeling it is gonna get rough and better we prepare for our pets in advance while we have the ability.

I'll post about taking care of our needs later in the week. I'm going to costco to stock up.

1. If you want food for the long haul, buy canned
dry food can become toxic if kept for too long.

Our rescue is having a pet food drive right now for the victims of hurricane Katrina. We'll be driving vans of food to the area, and taking back as many homeless pets as possible. To donate, go to www.petrescuebyjudy.com

25. You're terrific..thanks for doing this
I have asked before..any way to find out how the horses are? There must be thousands in the 3 states. Would they be able to leave to safe country?
Just received an email from ASPCA

2. I stockpile canned goods last March
sent the bull to slaughter on Monday. Been debating whether or not to send for some cash and stash it away just in case. Don't know how much would be appropriate to keep in the house.

6. Let Me Know If You Hear Anything...
... but I think we're seeing a first hand example of mass-hysteria propogating over the internet.

So have you heard the latest? Apparently...

WE'RE DOOMED! THE END IS NEAR!

16. I interpreted it as a concern about across the board
price gouging coming soon due to fuel prices. Pet food can be bought cheaply now and stores better than many of our own staples. If your pets are provided for when we all have to tighten our belts, that's one less thing to worry about.

Or maybe I'll just sell it on Ebay. (Thanks for the kind words, I'm flattered by the compliment.)

8. I don't know if the OP is referring to this specifically,
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 07:17 PM by Pharlo
but there is a standard disaster preparedness protocol for pets at noahswish website. If you have animals, I'd highly recommend checking it out...

http://www.noahswish.org/Dog%20supplies.htm

This site is for dogs. They have more pages for other animals.

Edit: Noahswish is an organization which goes into disaster areas to help the animals - in order to prevent your pet from becoming one of the 'lost', they put together a list of items that should be kept on hand just in case.

10. If I lived in a hurricnae damaged area..
That website would be great.

I don't however and my dogs are just fine.

Spreading fear and panic is not a good thing.

Some folks need to get a grip.

15. Actually, there are items on that site I found useful...
Next year during tornado season, I may keep modified versions of their 'kits' in the basement for the cat and dogs.

As for fear and panic, it's going to take a hell of a lot more than this thread to do that. Like I stated in my previous post, I'm not even certain that's what the OP was referring to...In fact, the first time I read it, my response was "Hunh?" as well...

Glad to hear your dogs are doing well - Mine too...Of course I am sure my pups would prefer I were to get off the computer and go play with them....LOL

17. Glad to hear your dogs are doing well!
Nothing like a happy dog! :)

Thing is... there has been so much crap here on DU today that I have had a hard time distinguishing fact from fiction.

It's always a good idea to make sure that your animals are happy and well nourished. That I think we can both agree on! :hi:

11. People here in the ATL are going NUTS! Fighting over gas traffic backed
up for miles.

I think we are heading for a huge recession. People don't think about their pets until the last moment. I like to prepare for them first.

13. It's Good To Think Ahead... But It's Better To Be Realistic...
... I don't think you have anything to worry about. What you were witnessing was one of those self-fulfilling rumors.

VERY MUCH like the time that Johnny Carson cracked a joke about a toilet-paper shortage. It was ONLY a joke... which became a rumor... which manefested itself into people PANIC BUYING every roll of toilet paper they could locate... which made the store shelves appear to be "sold out"... which PERPETUATED the belief that there was indeed a "toilet-paper-shortage"... but there wasn't one.

14. The gas "shortage" is supposed
to be resumed by the weekend.

Maybe this should have been posted in the Georgia forum? Georgia seems to be the state having the trouble right now.

Please.. and I am asking with all due respect...please do not spread fear and panic around. It really can make things worse.

Your love for animals is to be commended however. :hi:

22. What you don't think we are headed for hard times? I just asked
for people to purchase extra food for their pets.

With the price of gas going up we may not be able to afford food for our selves. I will starve before my pets go hungry. So if you have the cash now before gas goes up to $6 why not purchase some extra bags and cans of food?
