Veterans Day Poppy
Captain Beefheart, ladies and gentlemen:

I cry but I can't buy
Your Veterans Day poppy
It don't get me high
It can only make me cry
It can never grow another
Sun like the one who warmed me my days
After rain and warmed my breath
My life's blood
Screamin' empty she cries
It don't get me high
It can only make me cry
Your Veterans Day poppy.

1. Here's another one for you
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae 1872 - 1918

2. I was hoping someone would mention the good Captain today....
Also applicable on this sad day: "Dachau Blues." I shan't quote the lyrics, for they are gruesome.

3. I ran into a VFW member today trying to sell me a red poppy
I just said I had a problem with that, and walked on by. I will never buy anything from the VFW.
Last year, during the election, I had a email exchange with a Georgia chapter of the VFW. I accused them of backing chickhawk Chambliss over Max Cleland. They replied that by law they are prohibited from supporting any candidate, but they believe they could act in their best interest, and the Chambliss was in their best interest. Max Cleland left two legs and an arm in Vietnam. Those sons of bitches will never get even a smile from me again.
I am vet, not a combat vet, but a vet nevertheless, and I won't forget how the Georgia VFW treated a triple amputee.

4. The DAV sells forget me nots on Vets day
Disabled American Vets. Unless it is different in other places...but here we sold forget me nots Blue...and on Memorial Day the VFW and American Legion sell Red poppies. So please don't snub the DAV for what the VFW did. I have my own stories to tell about the VFW.:hi:

6. In the corner of the middle of a roundabout
pretty nurses selling poppies from a tray . . .

A friend of mine thought that Beatles line referred to OPIUM. I asked him WHY WOULD ENGLISH NURSES BE SELLING OPIUM IN THE MIDDLE OF ROUNDABOUTS? He said YOU KNOW HOW NURSES ALWAYS GET THE BEST STUFF. :7
