I can't believe how much I loved "Kill Bill"
The bat-boy and I went to see it this past weekend and I can't believe how much fun I had. You see, I'm not a huge Tarantino fan. I think that someone who steals from so many people might want to consider toning down the ego and pretention just a little bit. I hated Resevoir Dogs, liked (with some reservations) Pulp Fiction, was bored by Jackie Brown and have basically ignored all of his peripheral projects, particularly when he's "acting" in them.

That being said, I thought Kill Bill was a pleasant surprise. He unabashedly steals from other artists and genres, but for once he actually does them justice. I loved the blend of anime and film, with black and white mixed with color. I especially enjoyed the way he used flashbacks to only suggest the horror of the wedding massacre. The flashes of violence were far more gruesome than the violence between Uma Thurman and the people she kills.

Speaking of Uma, I thought making the lead warrior a woman, particularly a woman who does what has to do with no regret or remorse and casting Uma Thurman as that woman was brilliant. Her performance was subtle, fierce and at times, almost feral.

I cannot wait for part two, though I regret that the studio demanded Tarantino cut the film in two because of our culture's short attention spans. I could have easily sat through another 2 hours.

Uma.
For such a tiny woman, in all ways, no hips, breasts she FILLS the screen.

I can't imagine anyone else. Even Lucy Liu who has a million times more presence than in her other roles (and is wonderful in this movie) fails there.

It's a work of genius.

3. Was the violence as stylized as John Woo's films?
I begged off seeing 'The Killer' because of the bloodshed, but then I saw it on video with friends and was surprised by how the violence was elegantly choreographed, like watching a Twyla Tharp piece with Monty Pythonesque bloodshed. Is Kill Bill in the same mold?

6. the violence was weird
well, the blood anyway. It was unrealistic, but in a good way. It was as if high pressure hoses of blood were in peoples' arms or necks, causing magnificent fountains of red, rather than the minor explosive, but quickly ending realistic blood from really losing an arm..

12. It was less like John Woo
And more like Monty Python, just a little more graphic and with a lot more money for special effects. The violence was cartoonish, with blood spurting everywhere, limbs being cut off and people being beheaded.

The only disturbing violence was done not actually shown. The wedding massacre is shown in brief flashbacks and still photos. The origin of Lucy Liu's character is quite brutal and is was done completely in anime.
