I've never cared for the taste of gin. It sort of reminds me of aftershave.

Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 01:23 AM by HEyHEY
In fear and loathing Thompson always talks about singapor slings with mescal on the side.

12. Mescal is a liquor made from the agave. It's 'tequila' except |
|
that tequila is only made in Jalisco. Any liquors from the agave made in the style of tequila anywhere other than Jalisco, Mexico are mescal.

18. It's just a quirk, HeyHey. |
|
A Singapore Sling is:
1 1/2 ounce gin 1/2 ounce Cherry Herring brandy 1/4 ounce Cointreau 1/4 ounce Benedictine 4 ounces pineapple juice 1/2 ounce lime juice 1/3 ounce grenadine dash bitters
Having mescal on the side is just an idiosyncrasy. Like I know a man who drinks Southern Comfort with a pint of bitter. And another who like dunking Fig Newtons in his scotch.

30. I wouldn't use Hunter S. Thompson as a guide for mixing.... |
|
Whether it's Singapore Slings & Mescal or the combination he packed for Las Vegas, later in that same book (& movie):
"The trunk of the car looked like a mobile police narcotics lab. We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers ... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls."
The combination may have worked for him but most of it would find it a bit excessive. For example, I'd definitely leave out the Budweiser.

I agree, gin is awful. When I worked as a tarbender or cocktail waitress I only served a couple and they smelled like gasoline and the few that drank them got nasty. I wouldn't put that stuff in MY mouth.
How ya feelin' after ti martwonis? :D

I love martwonis!
My personal fave is a medium dry Vox vodka with a twist (of lime, of course).

May I ask if those martinis were shaken or stirred?
I know, I've been watching way too many James Bond films. But I've always wondered what the difference was.
