USC is in the Pac-10, which has several Top 25 teams, and is the BEST conference in college football. So the USC schedule is tougher by default.

Where Oakland has terrific ethnic food and terrific people and Howard Dean is unafraid to tell it like it is, unlike certain of our *other* politicians.

Oakland is an armpit, but never mind that. They deserve Jerry Brown as mayor.

Howard Dean is a demagogue. A huckster of the worst sort. He has the most inexplicable Cult of Personality in American Politics since Eugene McCarthy.

Here's why:

Howard Dean's "telling it like it is" amounts to nothing more than red-meat tossing to his vocal minority base.

He even calculates this red meat for maximum huckster effect, waiting to see what his base says before he reacts.

Case in point: He supported the Biden-Lugar Amendment leading up to the Iraq War, and supported the war for the first few months before OPPORTUNISTICALLY coming out against it when it was apparent what a debacle it was. VERY typical politician behavior.

Outside of his cherished anti-war stance, he is a squishy centrist who massively appeased corporations in their raiding of Vermont during his tenure as governor. He is DLC, without the baggage.

He waited until TUESDAY, MORE than a WEEK after the hurricane, to denounce Bush. Why? Because he had to stick his finger in the wind to see which way his base wanted him to go. Meanhwile, a REAL populist left-wing Democrat, Dennis Kucinich, spoke out against Bush on the House floor TWICE, within 3 days of the flood, and just this past week. He spoke much more SPECIFICALLY on ISSUES which reflected the reality of the poor response and conditions. Dean just offers RHETORIC and RED MEAT.

Dean is a triumph of style over substance. His chairing of the DNC is an illusory joke. He may bring in some money (he won't get mine), but he has NO PLAN, NO AGENDA, and NO SUBSTANCE to what kind of change he wants to bring to the party. He is all about Dean, and "firing up his base". His off-the-cuff style may endear him to his fans, but it is an embarrassment to the rest of us.

I understand the need for strong, vocal leadership at times like these, so I suppose I understand his appeal on that level - Dean LOOKS and SOUNDS like the leader some people crave.

He is all about rhetoric and REACTION, and not SPECIFIC ARGUMENTS and ACTION.

It is much more troubling for me to sit back and see my fellow liberals and Democrats fall for his demagoguery than it is for them to see a few truth-tellers like me make them uncomfortable with an objective analysis of his considerable shortcomings and failures.

I speak for myself, and I am troubled by people claiming Dean speaks for them, because it implies a kind of mass surrender of independent and objective thought. If people thought and spoke for themselves, there would be no need for a demagogue to fill the void.

So Dean fills that void, unfortunately, with a phony populist schtick which leaves one empty of nutrients, and crying for more.
