..and so would you.
I work for a company that monitors radio stations for content. My computer accepts skims of 6 seconds each. Every 2 minutes, the computer saves a skim from 13 different Modern Rock stations (my specialty format of expertise).
Throughout the day, I log in, and listen to the skims, identifying each song the stations play.
Yes, I play "Name That Tune" for a living.

All of them, together, are marginally sufficient to meet my financial obligations. But each of them, individually is ultimately fulfilling, challenging and provides tremendous feeling of accomplishing, of contributing. For what it's worth.

I've mentioned many negative things about it before. Bascially, I cannot stand working with idiots, working under irrational dictators who probably aren't even human, and having no hope for any advancement or reward for doing my job well. Maybe, I have a bad attitude. I think that my attitude in this job it is unsalvagable. Working where I do has really hurt my self esteem. I need to start anew somewhere else. My fear is that the other place might not be much better. I'll be sure to ask if they have sick pay though before accepting a new job. That would be one improvement.

6. Thinking of changing the nameplate on my office door... |
|
..to company 'ho!
It's really getting old around here.
Was supposed to go to MD in August for a short course in pyrotechnics... cancelled due to lack of funds.
Was supposed to go to CO next July for an international seminar and present a paper... just got told by my boss "My boss says cut one from the trip, and it's going to be you."
But yet others in my department have done courses/seminars after the supposed budget crunch. We just sent 3 engineers to Sweden for two weeks, and there is 9 people going to a demonstration next week, more than half of which have no input on the program whatsoever!
I think I can take a hint.

I really don't care for the work (commercial apartment painting) but i only have two people above me, and i only talk to them on the radio maybe twice a day. I make a very good hourly rate when it breaks down(i work for 40% of what the company makes), usually somewhere above 35 an hour. i'm off by 2 pm most days, sometimes earlier, and i start around 8:30 or 9 am. i'm really going to be screwed when i get a regular job since i've only had a couple normal type jobs in my life, and they are a struggle with authority and stupidity.

it's fairly secure, and in this job market, that's pretty damned important these days. They're solvent enough to pay the checks, and if you've ever worked for a small business that couldn't afford to pay you, you'll know how important that is. It's not 7x24 on-call, and in my profession (I'm a systems administrator), that's rare and valuable. The big thing, though, is that I have a manager who LEAVES ME ALONE. If I had a micromanager, this could be a miserable job, but thankfully, my manager is almost as hands-off as I am. If it were possible to work a flexible shift or at least a 4x10, I'd be very happy, but in a school district, you work the days and hours school's in session.

as a domestic god, while training to change career fields (for the second time). Been on "sabbatical" for 10 months. The downside is a shrinking savings account. The upside is that I have plenty of time to study.
Plus I get to sleep with the boss (who is hot). Can't go on forever but, all in all, not a bad gig.

Since i got laid off, not much else of a choice!
However...The job I had I really enjoyed. Excellent employer, met lots of people, and generally had a good time.
I was in Fire Protection/Prevention, and could not have asked for a better boss.
Made good money too.

15. I like my gig pretty darned well. |
|
It's for a non-profit, so the pay is modest, but it's a worthy field (researching/writing for the arts in higher education), and I enjoy what I do.
I have to shave, look sharp and wear a Jerry Garcia necktie every day, but I have a lot of personal freedom, my work is always well received, and I have gained much respect from my colleagues and superiors for my good humor and institutional knowledge.
The only aspect I don't care for is inescapable in most any profession -- and that is the dog-and-pony shows, the oral presentations in front of large groups. I do them well, but public speaking has always been a challenge, starting with high-school oral book report. It just never seems to get any easier over the years. Have to do one this Friday -- time to prepare!
I'll probably ride this job out to the finish line. I'd be a fool not to!

18. I really love some parts of my job and some days at work... |
|
...but other parts suck. I haven't had a genuine day off in months-- a big proportion of my research work is done on my "own time"-- and I'm feeling a bit burned out at the moment.
